Fandoms:
The Affair of the Mysterious Letter – Alexis Hall, BBC Sherlock

Characters:
John Wyndham, Shaharazad Haas, Sherlock Holmes, John Watson

Length: 11 minutes

Notes: Written as a gift for Iwantthatcoat, for the winter 2020 Holmestice exchange. Read as a gift for Vulgarweed, for the winter 2022 Holmestice exchange. Betaed by A.

Summary:

Irene Adler involves herself in the disappearance of Mary Morstan, and things no longer go to Sherlock’s plan.

That’s a good thing.

Characters:
Irene Adler, Mary Morstan, cameo appearances by others

Notes: Written for Holmestice Winter 2020 for [personal profile] vulgarweed, whose prompts were so appealing that they drew me into writing BBC Sherlock for the first time in years. :-) And thank you to my beta, [personal profile] smallhobbit!

MY HEART SHALL NOT REPROACH ME

Fandom: BBC Sherlock

Summary:

John had been his compass then; now it is John who is lost, and Sherlock tries to return that kindness in what small ways he can.

A remix of ancientreader’s “The Thing Which I Greatly Feared Is Come Upon Me.” Scenario and all dialogue by ancientreader.

Characters: Sherlock/John

Words: 2,200

Notes: A somewhat belated Holmestice treat for [personal profile] ancientreader, whose Holmestice sign-up request for a remix of “The Thing Which I Greatly Feared Is Come Upon Me” caught my imagination immediately. Thank you to [personal profile] pipmer1 for betareading!

SON OF DEMETER, NO FRIEND TO HADES

Fandom: BBC Sherlock

Summary: No, it’s not impossible, because he saw it happen before his eyes. Improbable, perhaps. Yes. But there has always been something improbable about John.

Characters: Sherlock, John, and Moriarty

Pairing: Sherlock/John

Words: 6,500

Notes: Written for [personal profile] zaffrefic for summer 2017 [community profile] holmestice. Thanks to [personal profile] pipmer1, the most enthusiastic beta! And thanks to [personal profile] arianedevere for the wonderful resource that is her episode transcripts – I referred to the transcript of The Great Game a lot for this.

LITTLE AMUSEMENTS, OR HOW ANTHEA GOT HER NAME

Fandom:
BBC Sherlock

Summary:

She made up secret personas each day to keep from going mad with boredom at her job. It amused her, and it didn’t matter since no one noticed anyway.

Until Mycroft Holmes noticed.

Characters: Anthea, Mycroft, original character

Words: 3,500

Notes: This is for [personal profile] indybaggins, who once said "I'd be curious to see how you portray Anthea," so ( . . . a little bit later . . . ) here she is.

I suppose I should further note – though it’s not hugely relevant for this particular story – that as a whole I’m pretty much ignoring the existence of S4 . . . so I’m writing the characters as they were around S1/S2-era or so. :-)

Thank you to [personal profile] pipmer1 for betareading!

IN TWENTY MINUTES

Fandom:
BBC Sherlock

Summary: After the hug, what then?

Characters: John, Sherlock

Words: 1,900

Notes: Ages ago [personal profile] pipmer1 left a prompt wanting to see “what happens between Sherlock and John right after that epic hug.” That stuck in my brain, and months later I’ve ended up writing my version of it…even though I’ve otherwise been trying valiantly to delete S4 from my brain entirely. ;-)

Thank you to [personal profile] indybaggins for betareading! We realized we were both writing fics about the exact same canon missing moment (though very different in tone) and decided to swap betaing. It was fun! And thanks as always to [personal profile] arianedevere, whose transcripts are a fandom resource and treasure.

Rated T for discussions of grief, and John’s swearing.

I realized recently that I never posted here about finnagain's delightful podfic of my fic "Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of Father Christmas." (I linked to the podfic from the story on AO3, but somehow forgot to do it here from LJ.)

Finn's podfic is great, and especially since that was my very first fic in the Sherlock fandom, to have someone show up with a podfic of it was such an amazing, wonderful, delightful surprise!

Here's Finn's podfic of "Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of Father Christmas" on AO3 or on Tumblr!

(Here's the original fic on AO3 or on LJ – I'll also add a link to the podfic from the fic itself on LJ, which is the step I somehow missed way back when Finn first did this.)

HOLLY TO THE IVY

Fandom: BBC Sherlock

Summary:

It’s Christmas – Sherlock’s first Christmas home from uni – and neither Holmes brother needs anyone.

Definitely not.

Characters: Sherlock, Mycroft, and briefly Mummy Holmes

Words: ~2,700

Notes: To me, this completes the arc of my Mycroft and Sherlock stories – a series of one-shots about the two of them as kids/young adults that I'm now calling “Brothers, Bitter and Sweet.” This story can stand alone, or can be read as continuing the themes in those stories ("Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of Father Christmas," "The Truth Will Break Your Heart," "Shadow and Shade"). And I find it pleasingly congruent that this story is set at Christmas, and so was my very first Sherlock story, one year ago.

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] stereolightning for beta-reading!

Length: 5 short chapters (ca. 12,000 words total)

Notes: This was my Winter 2015 Holmestice gift for biswholocked, whose fun requests included: fantasy or magical realism or Sherlock as some kind of supernatural/fae/magical being, emotional exploration between characters, some danger, possibly casefic, and Sherlock/Lestrade…

I'm rather proud of this one, because I did many things that were new for me! In Sherlock fandom, so far I'd mostly only written serious, introspective one-shots about Mycroft and Sherlock (in fact, the final one of those is coming tomorrow!), but this one is longer, with more plot and action and even a bit of romance! Plus fantastical mythical beasts!

Thank you to the [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit for such a fast, helpful beta, and to [livejournal.com profile] arianedevere for your amazing dialogue file. Phrases you recognise, dear reader, are either drawn from Arthur Conan Doyle himself (namely Holmes’ descriptions of Moriarty in “The Final Problem”) or BBC canon.

Story takes place pre-canon in a slightly alternate universe.

SHADOW AND SHADE

Fandom: BBC Sherlock

Summary:

“I didn’t need your help,” Sherlock sniffed, turning back to his object of study.

Mycroft sighed. “Yes, yes, I’m sure you didn’t.”

Characters: Sherlock, Mycroft

Words: ~1,900

THE TRUTH WILL BREAK YOUR HEART

Fandom:
BBC Sherlock

Summary: Sherlock had been too intelligent for well-intentioned lies for years now. Mycroft realised he would have to be told the truth.

Characters: Sherlock, Mycroft, Redbeard

Words: ~1,600

Tags/Warnings: Sherlock and Mycroft as kids, discussion of the death of a beloved pet/discussion of putting a pet to sleep, grief, comfort, kidlock, yes: stories of Mycroft worrying over Sherlock are apparently My Thing

Notes: Another story inspired by the musings of those lovely folks over at the Three Patch Podcast ([livejournal.com profile] threepatch) – in this case, Shannon, Roane and Caroline in the Sorting Redbeard segment of Episode 35: The Bitter Brother.

IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT WHO YOU'RE SLEEPING WITH

Fandom: BBC Sherlock

Summary: Molly has something to say about men who love each other. It’s hard to tell if Sherlock’s listening.

Characters: Molly Hooper, Sherlock Holmes

Words: 1,350

Notes: A little character moment for Sherlock and Molly, inspired by this thoughtful meta by professorfangirl – the post as a whole is a reaction to the concept of a “Johnlock Conspiracy,” but the part I’m referencing in particular is the last three paragraphs, where she talks about what a shame it is to reduce something as complex as human love down to dichotomies such as romantic vs. platonic.

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] stereolightning for beta reading, and to [livejournal.com profile] lizeckhart (professorfangirl) for the inspiration!

SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE MYSTERY OF FATHER CHRISTMAS

Fandom: BBC Sherlock

Summary: “I did the calculations,” Sherlock said, an incongruous statement in his piping child’s voice. “It doesn’t work. He’d have to visit a whole bunch of houses every single second. He’d have to travel faster than the speed of sound.”

Characters: Sherlock, Mycroft, Mummy Holmes, Daddy Holmes

Words: ~2,300

Notes: Yes, I wrote my first Sherlock fic! I can't quite believe it either.

Inspired by  [livejournal.com profile] threepatch podcast's Episode 31, "Holmes for the Holidays", where in the opening segment, hosts Rachael, Finn and Qui mused about what the dynamics of Holmes family Christmases must have been like when Sherlock and Mycroft were kids. Here's the bit of their conversation that inspired this story, roughly transcribed:

"Can you imagine the dad trying to maintain the mystery of Old Saint Nick, and then Mycroft and Sherlock having none of it?"
"I’m sure there's a great story there, and I hope somebody writes that as a holiday fic, if they haven't written it already – Sherlock deducing, as a young child, The Santa Mystery. And being very offended. Or I could see him going the other way and really believing in Santa, being really upset!"
"The heartbreak. Oh! Mycroft could try to have been the person that keeps the myth alive and will go out of the way to continue to trick Sherlock, 'cause he can do that."
