Summary: Elio and Oliver have found their way back to each other, and everything is old and new again.

Characters:
Elio/Oliver

Words: 900

Notes: This ficlet is inspired by a line from “once bitten and twice shy” by elospock, written for me this past Yuletide.

This could be read, if you choose, as following very soon after another fic of mine, Storm Hits the City and the Lights Go Out” – or it stands equally on its own.

Continuing this year's general tenor of "I wrote this months ago but never got it together to crosspost it here"...

Also, since it can't be stated too often: I utterly reject J.K. Rowling, her transphobia, and her choice to use her enormous platform to trumpet said
transphobia. I won't let her take away these characters who have brought joy into my life for so long, but I in no way support her as a person, author, or public figure. And I *more* than understand those who've chosen to go the other way, and no longer engage with HP fandom at all. Take care of yourselves out there, friends.

Miryem and the Purim Goblins )

starfishstar: (Default)
Fandom: Spinning Silver – Naomi Novik

Summary:

It had always been clear to me that people from throughout our quarter came to my grandfather for advice, knowing his reputation for wisdom and clear-eyed business sense. What took me longer to notice—because my eye wasn’t trained for it—was that people sought out my grandmother as well.

Characters:
Miryem Mandelstam, Miryem's grandmother, other characters

Notes: The first of my Purimgifts fics for [personal profile] chestnut_pod, belatedly cross-posting here... Here are the original notes:

Happy Purim – chag Purim sameach – chestnut_filly! It’s been such fun to write for you. We actually matched on a different fandom, but I felt drawn to write something Jewish and fun for this fun Jewish holiday, so I veered over into the world of Spinning Silver instead. :-)

A few notes: I hope you don’t mind that I set this within the headcanon of the original, short-story version of Spinning Silver, rather than the novel. It shouldn’t matter if you haven’t read the short story, though; just consider this a canon-divergent AU in which Miryem outwits the Staryk instead of marrying him, and stays in Vysnia near her grandparents.

You’ll almost certainly recognize many other elements as well, because I set out here to fuse Miryem’s world with some classic Yiddish folktales. I’ll give the sources of those tales in the endnotes. (There’s also a brief Yiddish glossary at the end, for anyone not already familiar with the terms used here.)

Thank you to my friend A. for betareading!

Fandom: Harry Potter

Summary:

“It’s silly,” Sirius said. “You’ll think I’m absurd.”

“I always think you’re absurd,” Remus countered, but with a fondness in his voice that entirely undermined his words.

Characters: Remus/Sirius

Words: 700

Notes:

I've been doing Flash Fiction February, using it as a chance to focus on original fiction...but a couple of days ago, Remus and Sirius snuck into the day's prompt anyway. :-)

(Also, it's been so long since the days when I used to dash off one-shots easily and at a moment's notice. So doing this now was satisfying and fun!)

Fandom: Fleabag

Summary: But what did God think about it all?

Characters:
Fleabag, the Priest, outside POV

Words: 1,300

Notes:

Written as a Yuletide treat for asuralucier ([personal profile] iomixit), who had such a fantastic prompt! I wasn’t able to finish this in time for Yuletide proper, and I know there are already multiple Yuletide Fleabag fics that do clever things with this idea… But I’ll toss mine in the mix anyway, because it really was a marvellously inspiring prompt. Happy belated Yuletide, asuralucier!

Enormous thanks to ashling, who betaed this with the great gift of honesty. Which in this case meant telling me the first version of this fic didn’t work, paving the way for this second version that we both like much better. Thank you, ashling!

Or: the Marauders practise reading tea leaves in preparation for a Divination exam, and see more than they bargained for.

Characters: Sirius, Remus, Lily, James, Peter

Words: 2,350

Notes: Written for [personal profile] coyotesuspect in the 2019 Remus/Sirius [community profile] small_gifts fest, for your prompt #2: “tea leaves ain’t shit” ;-)

(No, I don’t actually think any of the Marauders would have taken Divination to N.E.W.T. level. But let’s roll with it…?)

Thank you to Small Gifts beta extraordinaire [personal profile] liseuse! And thank you to my friend A. who came up with a fitting idea when I was trying to figure out what to see in Remus’ teacup.

TIME IS THE ENEMY, TIME IS THE GUIDE

Fandom: Call Me By Your Name

Summary:

“Imagine,” Elio says. “In twenty years, do you think we’d still be here?”

Or: late at night on the bench in the garden with Elio, Oliver thinks about time.

Characters:
Oliver/Elio

Words: ca. 1,000

Notes:

Written as a Yuletide treat for Macdragon / [personal profile] katemacetak. (I really don’t know if this is at all what you were looking for, because my mind got captivated by the “time” part of the quote you cited and stayed stuck on that… But in any case, here’s a little expansion of a canon scene, attempting to reach toward the lovely way your prompts talked about the film, and especially about the role of setting.) Thank you to xslytherclawx for betareading!

THIS THING THAT BUILDS OUR DREAMS YET SLIPS AWAY

Summary:
Who waits forever anyway?

Characters: Joseph Kavinsky/Ronan Lynch

Words: 1,500

Notes:

The song Kavinsky is playing in his car, as should become incredibly obvious very quickly, is “Who Wants to Live Forever” by Queen.

And to be very clear: I don’t condone anything about the way Kavinsky treats Ronan: the put-downs, the stalkerish obsession, the rampant disregard for consent. But it turns out it’s weird and fascinating to try to get inside Kavinsky’s head, so… this happened. (Also, this particular Queen song screams Kavinsky and Ronan to me, and wouldn’t let me go until I’d done something about it!)

It takes a little creative squinting to make this fit into the canon timeline, but go ahead and imagine this takes place sometime very shortly before the epic night of dreaming replica Camaros.

In honour of the fact that I’m IN CARDIFF RIGHT NOW (!!!), a Torchwood ficlet.

WILL WONDERS EVER CEASE

Fandom: Call Me By Your Name

Summary: Elio moves to New York. (Glimpses of their new life together, set across the course of one year.)

Characters:
Oliver, Elio, OC

Words:
3,700

Notes:

A New York coda to the series “He Thinks of Elio.” Thank you to Tessiebear81, whose comment got me thinking about this! It will probably make the most sense if you’ve read the rest of the series (or at least part 3, “Wasted My Life Playing Dumb”). But you could also get by if you just know the following:

When Oliver returned to New York after his summer with the Perlmans, trying to figure out what to do now that Elio had upended his life, he made friends with his elderly (and awesome) neighbor Esther. Her wisdom and perspective gave him just enough of a nudge towards making a different decision than in canon: daring to try to make things work with Elio despite his fears, and visiting him that winter for Hanukkah. Now a month or so has passed since that wintertime visit in Italy, and it’s the beginning of 1984.

Just to keep with the theme of the series, the title is of course from Sufjan Stevens, from “Mystery of Love.”

(This is a set of vignettes over the course of a year, each taking place on a different Jewish holiday – though as you’ll see, some relate more directly to the holiday in question than others.)

Previously in this series:
Sweetly, Before the Mystery Ends
Be My Rest, Be My Fantasy
Wasted My Life Playing Dumb
Sea Lion Caves in the Dark
