Fandom: We Are a Picturesque Small Town and We Refuse to Be the Setting for Your Romantic Comedy – Rachel Mans McKenny (McSweeney's)

Summary:

Hi friends! So, I know I mentioned to some of you that I'm going to be housesitting for my friend Natalie for a couple weeks. She and her husband live in this cute town called Spirit Falls and they needed someone to look after their cat while they're in France visiting her husband's family.

I'm headed there tomorrow—stay tuned!

Characters: OCs (and characters/entities mentioned in "We Are a Picturesque Small Town...")

Words: 4,465

Notes: Happy Yuletide, beautifulduckweed! How delighted was I to get assigned to write for you in this wonderful, silly, brand-new-shiny fandom? Very delighted, that's how. Thank you for your prompts, which gave me so many intriguing ideas to work with. Hope you enjoy!

Betaed by my friend A.

Additional notes as I'm posting this on Dreamwidth: This is the first time I wrote a fic in one of those super silly, super delightful "five-minute fandoms" (as in, a fandom in which you can familiarize yourself with the "canon," such as it is, in about five minutes) that get nominated for Yuletide, capture a lot of people's imaginations in that particular year and generate a lot of delight. Offering a fandom like this in my Yuletide sign-up was a bit of a stretch for me, since it's such an unknown, but it paid off handsomely because I indeed got matched on this fandom, with a recipient who offered a wealth of intriguing prompts, and it was such fun to play in fandom in such a new and unexpected way!

Fandom: Fleabag

Summary: A small thing in response to this wonderful prompt: "IS THE FOX MAGIC? Please say."

Characters:
Foxes, Priest, Fleabag

Words: 100

Notes: For syllic, Yuletide 2021.

ONE FOX

One fox, nose to the ground. Searching? Yes.

But not for a scent; searching for a trail of magic.

.

Two foxes meet in a park, confer. Did he go that way? No. That way.

.

Nine foxes converge beneath a window. Their quarry is inside, but not alone. Why must humans have so many emotions? It muddles the trail.

Eight foxes skulk away, one keeps watch.

.

Their quarry trails magic behind him; they’d like to learn his powers. But he always runs.

.

One fox pauses at a bus stop. A human points. The trail is strong now.

One fox goes on.

Summary:
Bitterblue and Giddon return home from Winterkeep a little different from how they left—and there's no keeping secrets from Po. ;-)

Characters:
Giddon, Bitterblue, Po

Words: 100

Notes: A small Yuletide treat for [personal profile] owlbeer, because the Yuletide Madness Drabble Invitational is such a delightful idea!

Read on AO3, or here below:

Po was at the docks, already smirking, when at last they disembarked in Monport.

“Oh, shut up,” Giddon told him, but it was hard to keep from grinning. He was fairly sure he’d been grinning since the moment he’d woken from his faint and found Bitterblue still alive.

Po embraced Bitterblue, then Giddon. Arm still slung around Giddon, he tousled Bitterblue’s wind-tossed hair, making her yelp. “You two finally figured it out, then?” Po asked, as Bitterblue shoved him away, then pulled him back to hug again.

“Yes,” Bitterblue said. “Now, you hush.”

Po only beamed at both of them.

Summary: Seven years later, in New York, in the midst of a blizzard, Oliver finally lets his feelings take the fore. It isn’t easy. (But it’s worth it.)

Characters:
Oliver/Elio

Words: 7,600

Notes: A Yuletide treat for asuralucier; here are the notes I wrote at the time –

Hello again, asuralucier :-) I was a bit sad that I didn’t manage to write you a fic last Yuletide, because I liked the streak we had going! But this idea stuck with me ever since; I tried to finish it for the New Year’s Resolution collection, but didn’t manage even that… So, here, have a Yuletide 2020 gift as a 2021 Madness treat. :D

This fic is loosely/thematically inspired by “With the color of its thoughts” by asuralucier, but takes somewhat different headcanons as a starting point.

Thank you very much to timkon for beta reading.

IT FEELS LIKE HOPE

Fandom: Fleabag

Summary: But what did God think about it all?

Characters:
Fleabag, the Priest, outside POV

Words: 1,300

Notes:

Written as a Yuletide treat for asuralucier ([personal profile] iomixit), who had such a fantastic prompt! I wasn’t able to finish this in time for Yuletide proper, and I know there are already multiple Yuletide Fleabag fics that do clever things with this idea… But I’ll toss mine in the mix anyway, because it really was a marvellously inspiring prompt. Happy belated Yuletide, asuralucier!

Enormous thanks to ashling, who betaed this with the great gift of honesty. Which in this case meant telling me the first version of this fic didn’t work, paving the way for this second version that we both like much better. Thank you, ashling!

ALL THAT I'VE KNOWN TO BE OF LOVE

Fandom: Call Me By Your Name

Summary: Oliver leaves. Oliver gets married. Oliver is gone. But, one day, they begin to write each other letters…

Characters:
Oliver/Elio

Words: 6,500

Notes:

Written as a Yuletide treat for boywonder, who asked:

What if Oliver came back?
What if Oliver’s marriage didn’t work out and he came back then?
What if they wrote letters to each other for years?
What if they saw each other again after years?

(Note: one small bit of book canon slid its way into this: that Elio and Oliver went to Rome together at the end of Oliver’s stay. But it’s otherwise set in the world of the movie: namely, that the future is left open and we can decide what happens beyond that final winter scene!)

My great thanks to asuralucier for helpful, detailed, fast betareading at quite the 11th hour!

Fandom: Call Me By Your Name

Summary:

Or: late at night on the bench in the garden with Elio, Oliver thinks about time.

Characters:
Oliver/Elio

Words: ca. 1,000

Notes:

Written as a Yuletide treat for Macdragon / [personal profile] katemacetak. (I really don’t know if this is at all what you were looking for, because my mind got captivated by the “time” part of the quote you cited and stayed stuck on that… But in any case, here’s a little expansion of a canon scene, attempting to reach toward the lovely way your prompts talked about the film, and especially about the role of setting.) Thank you to xslytherclawx for betareading!

ONE WEIRD THING

Fandom: Call Me By Your Name

Summary: Oliver is so irritatingly perfect. Why, Elio wonders, can’t he have just one weird habit?

Characters:
Elio, Oliver, Samuel, Annella

Words:
200

Notes: A Yuletide Madness treat for [personal profile] lionessvalenti.

Dear lionessvalenti, I read your Yuletide letter and I loved this prompt so much:

“What I love about this movie is its exploration of intimacy. It has these really beautiful moments or not just sexual/romantic intimacy, or the familiar intimacy of Elio and his parents, but the things people do when they're alone. The silly things, the mindless, the quiet. One of my favorite little scenes is that moment when Elio puts Oliver's trunks on his head. It's something no one would ever do with anyone around, but there's a freedom in being alone, and seeing someone just being alone makes this movie so beautiful. I think that's the beauty of the infamous peach scene, and Elio's reaction, is having those weird things we do by ourselves called out and noticed.”

I tried for ages to write you a different, longer, more serious fic to that prompt, but it just wasn’t working out. Then Karios told me you like drabbles! So instead, here’s a (double) drabble for you.

Thank you to Karios for betareading. :-)

BE MY REST, BE MY FANTASY

Fandom: Call Me By Your Name

Summary:
Elio is reading poetry. Of course.

Characters:
Elio/Oliver

Words:
1,600

Notes:

A Yuletide treat for two recipients, because I ended up inextricably inspired by both of you.

Ghostcat’s guidelines for writing Elio and Oliver were a delightful encapsulation of these two characters:

“1. Elio and Oliver are always intelligent.
 2. They are always Jewish.
 3. Elio is always inclined towards boldness and
 4. Oliver always loves it.”

And [personal profile] lionessvalenti’s prompt for “UST-filled teasing and roughhousing” was so evocative that it slipped in and declared its place in this fic before I even knew it! That combination of intelligence, boldness and physicality seemed just right for Elio/Oliver.

The title is – but of course – from Sufjan Stevens, from the song “Should Have Known Better.”

Thank you to Karios for above-and-beyond betareading!

A Yuletide treat for[personal profile] iomixit.

Dear iomixit/asuralucier, I was browsing through Yuletide letters, and your prompt about how much Oliver needs a hug grabbed my mind and wouldn’t let go. I wasn’t necessarily planning to write in this fandom, and yet here we are. :-) Happy Yuletide!

Title from (of course) Sufjan Stevens, from the song “John My Beloved.”

SINCE YOU ASK ME FOR A TALE OF MAGIC

Fandom: John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme

Summary: Well, since you ask me for a tale of magic, I do have one account you may find…enchanting.

Characters:
Finnemore (the Storyteller), plus a bit of a stealth crossover character

Words: 1,500

Notes: A Yuletide treat for [personal profile] calliatra.

Dear Calliatra, I was so delighted to be matched with you; we share at least two fandoms and clearly also a ton of interests, and you had SO many fun prompts! My “official” gift to you is the Penguin Diplomacy fic, but for some reason first my brain dashed off this absurdity, which I hope you enjoy.

This story sounds better if you imagine it in John Finnemore’s voice, but then, you knew that already. :-)

(With apologies to everyone else in the world, because this doesn’t make a lot of sense unless you avidly follow John Finnemore’s work. Possibly it may not make a lot of sense even if you do!)

Thank you to the kind, delightful and funny [personal profile] scfrankles for beta-reading.

FURTHER NEGOTIATIONS AMONGST THE PENGUINS

Fandom:
John Finnemore's Double Acts

Summary: Stuck inside on a stormy night, Søndergaard and Bunning talk about divorce, love, loneliness, and what it takes to build a nest together. They’re talking about the penguins. Obviously.

Characters: Søndergaard/Bunning

Words: 2,400

Notes: A Yuletide gift for [personal profile] calliatra.

Dear Calliatra, what a pleasure to be matched to you! Your Penguin Diplomacy prompts were so delightful, I knew I had to write you a fic in this fandom. (Though it’s a daunting task, because Penguin Diplomacy itself is so perfectly crafted that it’s hard to know where to go from there!) Thank you also for mentioning script format – I’ve had great fun setting myself the challenge of writing this story as though it really were a radio play.

For anyone who doesn’t know it, John Finnemore’s “Penguin Diplomacy” is a charming, funny, and extremely clever half-hour radio play and so very much worth a listen.

And thank you so much to Karios, who jumped in to beta this fic sight totally unseen, not knowing me OR the canon. True Yuletide kindness!
