[This haaaardly counts as a fic – it's a poem and only 21 words long – but it's a treat I wrote for this round of Holmestice, so for the sake of completeness, here it is!]

Fandoms: Mary Russell series by Laurie R. King, also nominally a crossover with the Dracula series by Fred Saberhagen (another "More Holmes" rare Sherlock Holmes 'verse) but you don't need to be familiar with that one to read this – a passing familiarity with the concept of Dracula will suffice!

Summary:

Left at home while Holmes is away applying his skills to the war effort, Russell receives an unexpected visitor.

A teaser excerpt from “Blood Relatives” by language_escapes.

Characters:
Mary Russell, Mina Harker

Notes: This is my other Holmestice gift for [personal profile] language_escapes – this was originally planned as my main Holmestice work, but then it didn't qualify for the fest since it's only an excerpt. So this became a Holmestice treat, and I made the Mary Russell & Harriet Vane artwork as well. :-)

Thank you to beta extraordinaire [personal profile] sanguinity, who somehow found the time to coach me through this and the artwork (both of them entirely new fanwork forms for me) alongside all her other Holmestice duties. I'm not actually sure where I would have ended up, this Holmestice, if not for sanguinity.

THIS MEETING OF LIKE MINDS

Fandoms: Mary Russell series by Laurie R. King, Lord Peter Wimsey series by Dorothy L. Sayers

Summary: Two women, both alumnae of the same esteemed university, meet one day at the Bodleian Library.

Characters:
Mary Russell, Harriet Vane

Notes: Created as a Holmestice gift for [personal profile] language_escapes. Many thanks to [personal profile] sanguinity for alpha and beta reading this project, and for the Oxford setting. (Shifting this to Oxford was inspired.)

Here the role of Harriet Vane is played by Dorothy L. Sayers herself, and the role of Mary Russell is played by the inimitable Katharine Hepburn...admittedly she's nothing like how Mary Russell is described in the books, in terms of appearance, but there's a certain similarity in attitude and personality that seemed right!

THE GLORIOUS DISGUISE

Fandom:
My Dearly Beloved Detective

Summary:
On a quiet night in front of the fire at 221B Baker Street, Shirley tells Jane about the greatest disguise of her career.

Characters: Shirley Holmes/Jane Watson

Words: 2,700

Notes:

For [personal profile] sanguinity, for Holmestice.

Dear Sanguinity, you are a pillar of the Holmestice community in general, and an inspiration to me in particular, and here is a Holmestice treat for you! You asked what led Shirley and Jane to apply for these roles; and you often mention your love of “old and deep relationships with a lot of history in them.” I’ve tried to give you a little of both those things.

To those who may not know “My Dearly Beloved Detective”: In this ‘verse, Sherlock Holmes is fictional, but people kept looking for him and his detective skills, so eventually a real detective agency was set up at 221B Baker Street. Shirley Holmes and Jane Watson are the two women who stepped into those famous literary roles.

And by the way, in the film Shirley and Jane part ways at the end, but in my world that never happened. :-)

Thank you to [personal profile] colebaltblue for betaing and enthusiasm!

DO YOU OBSERVE?

Fandom: 221B Baker Towers

Summary:

Life with Holmes is nonstop.

Characters: Sherlock Holmes and John Watson

Words: 1,600

Notes:

For[personal profile] sanguinity, for Holmestice.

A million thanks to [personal profile] grrlpup for such a detailed and enthusiastic beta, and to [personal profile] smallhobbit for fast and knowledgeable britpicking.

About this ‘verse:

221B Baker Towers is a fan-created universe, in which Sherlock Holmes is a young, black British man on a London council estate. As concept originator sophistry put it:

“…if Sherlock Holmes didn’t employ street kids and homeless people like trained animals to do his bidding, but instead was part of that invisible underclass; if instead of having his eccentricities tolerated by Scotland Yard on account of being the Great White Genius, Sherlock Holmes, BME, school dropout, and sometime addict, was regarded by the police as practically a criminal already, one more thug, one more junkie, one more dealer in the making. […] If the greatest threat to his safety were police brutality, or the prospect of being done for a snitch; if his arch enemy weren’t Moriarty, but the systemic poverty and inequality that has him helping out his oppressors just to get by…”

I’ve also drawn from various additional headcanons that can be found on the 221B Baker Towers tumblr, most notably that Watson is from Afghanistan.

About this fic:

Inspired by [personal profile] rachelindeed’s ACD Holmes story “Literary Shortcomings”, which is where I first came across the “1 sentence” format. Credit for the format and the prompts belongs to 1sentenceorder, theme set delta. Where I have strayed a bit from the format, it’s my fault, not theirs. :-)

THE FIXED FOOT

Fandom: My Dearly Beloved Detective

Summary: In a meeting of equal minds, who rescues whom?

Characters: Shirley Holmes/Jane Watson

Words: 2,600

Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] okapi1895 for the winter 2017 round of [community profile] holmestice.

For those who don’t know it, My Dearly Beloved Detective is a wonderfully goofy film (Scotland Yard constables performing song-and-dance routines in their pyjamas??) with a surprisingly melancholy heart. Shirley Holmes and her friend/assistant Jane Watson investigate a complicated case (set up by jealous Inspector Lester, who wants to take Shirley down for daring to be a better detective than him) that requires them to go undercover at a gentlemen’s club. Shirley pushes Jane into this disguise, and after they’re almost discovered, a painful scene ensues where Jane breaks down in tears, tells Shirley she’s demanding too much, and ultimately ends up accepting a marriage proposal from Robbie Summers, a man she’d previously turned down. This fic goes AU after that point!

My great thanks to [personal profile] sanguinity for betareading and enthusiasm!
