While on his undercover mission to the werewolves, Remus disappears. Tonks sets out north, across countries and islands and frozen terrain, on a quest to find the man she loves and reclaim him from the clutches of a powerful magical beast. Note: This chapter is dedicated to C., who – in a stage production of The Snow Queen I worked on – played the role that's equivalent to the character you'll meet in the second half of this chapter. She's an extraordinary actor, and her portrayal inspired the way I've written the character here.

(A fairy tale fusion, bringing together the world of Harry Potter with the plot of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen. Or: in which I took a 19th century fairy tale that's surprisingly full of strong female characters, and added even more of them.)

Characters: Tonks, Remus, original characters/characters drawn to varying degrees from The Snow Queen, brief cameos from Dumbledore and Mad-Eye Moody

Words: 31,100 / Chapters: 7

Notes:

A fusion with The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen. (Snippets of inspiration also drawn from Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu, a modern-day retelling.) You don’t need to know The Snow Queen to read this – though if you do know the original, I hope you’ll enjoy the nods and parallels throughout!

This is an AU, but takes place during HBP and slots pretty much into the chronology of canon, as long as you subtract the bits when Harry crossed paths with Tonks or Remus during HBP – they’re on a different adventure here. (Also, ignore Pottermore; in my mind, Remus and Tonks had begun at least the tentative unfurling of a romance by the end of OotP.)

My greatest of thanks to [personal profile] gilpin25 for betareading in such detail and being so thoughtful in response to my many questions; also to [personal profile] huldrejenta and [personal profile] nerakrose for fielding questions about Norwegian geography and language, and Scandinavian names, respectively; and to brickspace friend E for betareading early sections. An early, partial version of this story posted at [community profile] rt_morelove (over a year ago!) but a lot has changed and grown since then, so I invite anyone who’s interested to read along again!

THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF BLACK

Summary: Remus Lupin has heard not a single word from his old friend Sirius Black since Sirius retreated to his family’s ancestral home, abruptly and without explanation, twelve years ago. Now Remus receives an urgent letter from Sirius, begging him to visit the House of Black.

Characters: Sirius, Remus, Regulus, Kreacher

Words: 16,000

Notes:

I was thinking about Edgar Allan Poe’s story “The Fall of the House of Usher” and about the “Noble and Most Ancient House of Black,” and how delightfully they might map onto one another: two grim houses, one gothic tale! But in this one, perhaps there’s romance to be had as well…

(This is an AU and a fusion with Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” but you don’t in the least need to have read that story to enjoy this. Though if you have read it, I hope you’ll get a kick out of spotting the parallels!)

Written for the 2017 Remus/Sirius Games (Team Sirius, Day 21; prompt: picture of a stack of old books with a glass jar on top).

I’ve also created a music playlist to accompany this story (see the end notes for links to individual songs).

Thanks so much to [personal profile] huldrejenta for betareading!

Length: 5 short chapters (ca. 12,000 words total)

Notes: This was my Winter 2015 Holmestice gift for biswholocked, whose fun requests included: fantasy or magical realism or Sherlock as some kind of supernatural/fae/magical being, emotional exploration between characters, some danger, possibly casefic, and Sherlock/Lestrade…

I'm rather proud of this one, because I did many things that were new for me! In Sherlock fandom, so far I'd mostly only written serious, introspective one-shots about Mycroft and Sherlock (in fact, the final one of those is coming tomorrow!), but this one is longer, with more plot and action and even a bit of romance! Plus fantastical mythical beasts!

Thank you to the [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit for such a fast, helpful beta, and to [livejournal.com profile] arianedevere for your amazing dialogue file. Phrases you recognise, dear reader, are either drawn from Arthur Conan Doyle himself (namely Holmes’ descriptions of Moriarty in “The Final Problem”) or BBC canon.

Story takes place pre-canon in a slightly alternate universe.

Also at AO3!
