Yuletide recs!
Dec. 31st, 2019 04:50 pmYuletide is upon us! Well, has been upon us for a week, actually. :-) I've been trying to read my way through a bunch of fandoms, in between everything else. And I haven't actually finished with that, but I'm going to go ahead and do a recs post now, before author reveals, and for this year that's just going to have to be good enough!
YULETIDE RECS
• 221B Baker Towers: I have to talk about this first, because this is a fandom I've been championing hard over the last couple of years, and I'm OVER THE MOON that it's gained traction at Yuletide! A little over a year ago there were 5 fics in this fandom on AO3; between the combined efforts of Holmestice and Yuletide there are now 11 fics. Hurrah! I actually haven't read the two new Yuletide fics yet (Full House and Baker Tower) because I want to really give them proper time and attention, but keerawa – the lucky recipient of four(!!) 221BBT fics between last year's and this year's Yuletides – has a great rec of them both HERE.
Now for some recs of fics I have read:
• Little Women by Louisa May Alcott: Life – This character study of Beth moved me and I'm still thinking about it.
• Russian Doll: People had been recommending this show to me for ages, of course, but I think it was seeing it in the Yuletide requests that finally nudged me over the edge to watch it. Just as fantastic as advertised! And unsurprisingly, fic writers did great things with it too. I especially enjoyed: Commence!, Working Through It and Stumbling Towards Better.
• Fleabag: This is a show I definitely watched because it kept turning up in Yuletide requests, and wow, it really is one of the best things you'll see in a long time. Honestly, all of the Yuletide fic for this fandom did a great job with the characters, but I'll especially mention Unique to Him in All the World, which has wonderful ideas about God and foxes, and Unknowable, in which Claire has a request for the Priest.
• Seven Kingdoms trilogy by Kristin Cashore: Katsa’s Guide to the Seven Kingdoms – A lovely exploration of the many facets of Katsa and Po's relationship. (With a great cameo by Bitterblue, too!)
• Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik: Miryem and the Three Goblins – The world of Spinning Silver combined with the sensibility of Eastern European Jewish folktales! The Chanukah gift I didn't know I needed. :-)
• Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin: Both of the fics in this fandom (Ascendant and From the Vantage of Forgetting) capture the tone of the series excellently.
• Dublin Murder Squad series by Tana French: bergamot and vetiver – Captivatingly portrays the atmosphere among the group of friends in The Likeness, before everything went wrong.
• Jackalope Wives by Ursula Vernon (a.k.a. T. Kingfisher): – Half Moon – Wonderfully continues the character and perspective of Grandma Harken.
(...And all of those are fandoms where the source material – the book or show – is written by women. Which I didn't even realize until I looked at them together. That's awesome!)
Fandoms I haven't had a chance to read yet, but absolutely plan to:
• Much Ado About Nothing (2011): This year's Yuletide introduced me to the marvelous 2011 production of Much Ado (the one with David Tennant and Catherine Tate, and they're excellent) so I'm looking forward to reading this fic, Being Known, which is based on this version.
• Lord Peter Wimsey: I love that this is a reasonably small fandom overall, but such a big player in Yuletide. There are 8 Wimsey fics, and I look forward to having a read through them!
• untitled goose game: I've only even heard of this because of so many people requesting it and enthusiastically discussing it during Yuletide sign-ups, but it's definitely a star of the show this year, with 15 works in the main Yuletide collection and 8 works in the Madness collection. The game sounds totally charming, as do the fics! Plus, a bunch of them look to be wonderful, crack-y, meta-y things (like: a Yuletide fic about Yuletide) so I'm really looking forward to wandering around in this fandom even though I've never played the game it's based on. :-)
Happy Yuletide, everyone, and happy nearly new year!
