LIKE LEAVES AND KINGS

Summary: The leaves are falling, the seasons are changing, and adult life is rushing towards them. But the Marauders will always find time for one last hurrah.

Characters: Marauders, with perhaps a hint of Remus/Sirius

Words: 1200 (4 x 300)

Notes: This set of triple drabbles came about in part as my submission for hp_halloween... But in the process of trying to write one (triple) drabble, I accidentally wrote four. :-) Thank you to [personal profile] rachelindeed for betareading!

RIVER, SEA AND STREAM

Summary: Remus and Sirius, three moments: in the sunlight of the old days, in the cold of the years apart, and in the quiet, hopeful days of coming back together.

Characters: Remus/Sirius

Words: 300

Notes: A quick triple drabble written for [personal profile] shaggydogstail’s prompt in the 2019 Remus/Sirius [community profile] small_gifts fest:

“We twa hae paidl'd in the burn // frae morning sun till dine // But seas between us braid hae roar'd // sin' auld lang syne”
(from Auld Lang Syne by Rabbie Burns).

LET THE TEA LEAVES FALL

Summary:

Sirius frowned down at the teacups. “There are so many other things I could be doing with my time. Are we taking this seriously, really?”

Or: the Marauders practise reading tea leaves in preparation for a Divination exam, and see more than they bargained for.

Characters: Sirius, Remus, Lily, James, Peter

Words: 2,350

Notes: Written for [personal profile] coyotesuspect in the 2019 Remus/Sirius [community profile] small_gifts fest, for your prompt #2: “tea leaves ain’t shit” ;-)

(No, I don’t actually think any of the Marauders would have taken Divination to N.E.W.T. level. But let’s roll with it…?)

Thank you to Small Gifts beta extraordinaire [personal profile] liseuse! And thank you to my friend A. who came up with a fitting idea when I was trying to figure out what to see in Remus’ teacup.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, [livejournal.com profile] shimotsuki! Thanks for inspiring us all with your Kaleidoscope stories, for bringing us together as a community in places like [livejournal.com profile] rt_morelove, and for being such a supportive friend and reader of others' stories. As soon as JKR announced that Sirius Black shared a birthday with you, I knew I had to write you something for the day…it was simply a question of what. Hope you enjoy!

Sirius Black and the Case of the Missing Dirigible Plums

Summary: There’s a mystery afoot in Gryffindor Tower, and Sirius is going to get to the bottom of it: Who stole the dirigible plums?

Characters: Sirius Black, James Potter, Lily Evans

Words: ca. 2,500

Notes: Happy birthday, shimotsuki! This fic is for you, who share a very special birthday with one Sirius Black. As I pondered “What Can I Write About That’s Sirius-Centric And Shimotsuki Will Enjoy?” I thought of your love of mystery stories, and our shared appreciation of Dorothy L. Sayers’ books. And I had a very silly idea.

Characters belong to J.K. Rowling; plot elements shamelessly and zanily lifted from “Talboys” by Dorothy L. Sayers. (Forgive me for leaving out the snake and the child-rearing debates...but you’ll find most of the rest intact!)

RELENTLESS SUNSHINE

Summary:
Sometimes, the young have wisdom for the old. A rare sunny moment in the Order of the Phoenix.

Characters: Mad-Eye Moody, Lily Evans Potter

Words: 760

Notes: For the [livejournal.com profile] rs_games' ficlet activity; I’m not even playing in the Games this year, but I can never seem to resist a prompt. Mine was Mad-Eye Moody + Lily Evans Potter + the phrase “relentless sunshine.” (And yes, I realized belatedly I’d read the prompting chart wrong, and my secondary character was supposed to be Albus Dumbledore, not Lily. Oh well, at least he got a mention in the fic!)

NEVER SAY NEVER NEVER

Summary: Remus makes Sirius watch his first Muggle film. The experience is less horrible than predicted.

Characters/Pairing: Remus/Sirius, James/Lily, Peter

Rating: PG

Words: ~2,700

Notes: Set during the Christmas holidays of seventh year, late 1977.

I wrote this as a just-in-case back-up story for the [livejournal.com profile] rs_games, to have on hand if Team Muggle needed more pinch-hits. Team Muggle ended up being fine, luckily, so now this story just is. The prompt I wrote it for was #28 here – a picture of a cosy room with a fireplace.

This story isn’t my headcanon of Remus/Sirius, even if I had a headcanon of Remus/Sirius, which I don’t think I do. It’s just an idea that seemed like fun. :-)

SIRIUS...BLACK (SIX DRABBLES)

Summary: Sirius Black, and the most important people in his life. Six moments.

Characters: Sirius, Remus, James, Peter, Lily, Harry, the Black family

Rating: T / PG-13 (no pairings, but mentions of violence, grief, death, all that canon stuff)

Words: 6 x 100

Notes: This is a little challenge I set myself – six drabbles (each 100 words precisely), each set five years apart, each starting with "Sirius" and ending with "Black" – for “The Day of the Black Dog,” a Sirius-centric event happening today over at the [livejournal.com profile] sirius_black community. Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] huldrejenta for pointing me to that event!

Each heading shows Sirius' age/the year, and the person who's the focus of the drabble.

CAST YOUR SOUL TO THE SEA

Summary:
On a boat leaving England, Remus is not as alone as he thinks. (A sequel, of sorts, to "Skellig, Azkaban, Albion, Éire.")

Characters: Remus, Lily (in Remus' memory)

Words: ~950

Notes: While writing “Skellig, Azkaban, Albion, Éire,” which was initially inspired by a Loreena McKennitt song, I also listened to a lot of Loreena McKennitt, to be in the right atmosphere for the writing. Literally moments after finishing tweaking the last few words of that story, I heard the lyrics of the song I had currently playing – and this story happened.

This follows on directly from the end of "Skellig, Azkaban, Albion, Éire."

OH THE RISING OF THE SUN AND THE RUNNING OF THE DEER

Summary:
The Marauders act out a cheery favourite carol. (Christmas 1980.)

Characters: Lily, James, Sirius, Remus, Peter, baby Harry

Words: 100

Notes: This drabble (yes, it’s precisely 100 words if you don’t count the interspersed lyrics!) was inspired by [livejournal.com profile] author_by_night’s prompt of “Christmas Carol: The Holly and the Ivy” at the [livejournal.com profile] rt_morelove Stocking Filler Exchange, but then I just couldn’t seem to get this to be about Remus and Tonks – it insisted on being the Marauders instead. So, it's here, not there.

I kind of think this ought to be a picture, but I can’t draw, so it’s a drabble instead. If it’s songfic for a medieval Christmas carol, is it still songfic?

BUY ONE, GET ALL FOUR

Summary:

"Your mates have been after me for months to go out with you," Lily said. "Why, didn't you put them up to it?"

"Me?" James sounded affronted. "You know I'd never stoop to such underhanded methods."

Characters: Lily, Sirius, Peter, Remus and James

Warnings: None

Words: 2,700

Acknowledgements: JKR for the characters, of course, and Jewels5 for a conversation between Lily and Sirius (in "The Life and Times") that inspired this particular story.

ALL THE TIMES THINGS CHANGED FOREVER

Summary:

She wasn't even surprised when the Headmaster with the weird name of the weird school rejected her childish plea to come along too, because Petunia already knew she wasn't special. She didn't make fuses blow and flowers grow three times as fast.

She didn't even really want to be able to do those things. But she didn't want to lose Lily.

So to keep from being left, she left first.

Characters: Lily and Petunia

Warnings: None

Words: 3,300

Author's note: Believe me, I was as surprised as anyone when I found a way to sympathize with Petunia Dursley.

AMONG THESE FIELDS OF GOLD

Summary:

"And someday we'll be coming here with your grandchildren, Prongs," Remus said, "and they'll all run round the field and you'll try to tell them stories about the old days and they'll be properly horrified to think their doddering elders ever even did young people things."

"Like this, you mean?" James asked and leaned over to give Lily a smacking kiss on the lips.

"Ewww!" Sirius moaned. "My eyes, Prongs! My eyes!"

"Or it will just be Sirius you horrify," Remus murmured, suppressing a smirk as Sirius tackled James.

(Set after OotP, but also in the Marauders era.)

Characters Remus, with James, Lily and Sirius

Warnings: None

Words: 1,900

Disclaimer: I don't own the wizarding world or Number 12, Grimmauld Place.

Tangentially inspired by Eva Cassidy's version of "Fields of Gold."
