The Remus Recs. Because I can never get enough of Remus Lupin, can you?

These recs were mostly compiled in late 2013, but I've tried also to update and tweak a bit since then. Includes Remus/Tonks, Remus/Sirius, Remus gen, and Remus in other pairings.

REMUS/TONKS

* shimotsuki's
Kaleidoscope series, which follows the entirety of Remus and Tonks’ relationship through OotP, HBP and DH – a project she’s been working on for something like 10 years! shimotsuki writes incredibly canon-true stories; she basically guessed everything JKR had in mind about the characters long before any of it was revealed on Pottermore. Her stories are always thoughtful and compassionate and emotionally real. She also has an AU series (Remus and Tonks live!) called the Warp and Weft ‘verse. For a single story to try as a sampler, I’ve always liked A Matter of Opportunity – where Remus and Tonks deal with the pitfalls of the first full moon after Teddy’s birth, and come out happier by the end.

* gilpin – another longtime R/T writer whose stories are always thoughtful and true to character. Hard to pick just a few, maybe
Protecting All Others for a nice little slice of characterization, or In the Aftermath for her take on the hospital wing scene, from an unusual POV. Also, The Glass Slipper – a delightful and clever crossover-ish story where Tonks and Remus accidentally end up in a retelling of Cinderella.

* stereolightning – all her R/T stories, especially
Chrysalis (a series of moments in Remus and Tonks getting back together after Remus' freak-out during Deathly Hallows) and To Revel in Roses (two scenes set just before and just after getting married).

* copperbadge (aka Sam Starbuck) – my all-time favorite fanfic writer…and Remus was his favorite character when he wrote in the Harry Potter fandom. He has perhaps a somewhat different take on Remus (tougher, sometimes angrier, and not as self-effacing as he’s often portrayed). Sam is an amazing writer, and expresses such a deep understanding of Remus and all that he’s struggled through. Sam wrote back in the day before all the HP books had come out, so his stories aren’t canon-compliant in the strictest sense, but they’re definitely true to character. It’s so hard to pick just a few, but here are some favorites:
Amid My Solitude explores many different aspects of Remus – struggling to be a leader, navigating a fledgling romance with Tonks, trying to be there for Harry and the Order, paying a dangerous visit to the werewolves. Sam is the first author I saw give the werewolves a true culture of their own, and he inspired my writing on that point.
The Last Dance – A CLASSIC. Tonks takes Remus as her date to the Auror Ball.
Remus Lupin's Booty Call – only Sam could write a story with that title and make it heartbreaking and beautiful
Rhapsody in Blue – Aww. Remus teaches Tonks to waltz. Funny, sexy and lovely.
Cartographer's Craft – mainly Harry/Sirius (and yes, it's not weird – it's an AU where Harry and Remus uncover a hidden section of the Marauder's Map and release a 16-year-old version of Sirius from it) but also includes wonderful Remus/Tonks woven through.
The Lens of Years – "The chronicle of Remus' uneasy relationship with the Tonks family, and 'that kid Nymphadora' in particular." – Remus and Tonks over the years, with past Remus/Sirius. (I usually don't like stories that try to cram both R/S and R/T into the same universe, but of course Sam would manage to be the exception to that!)

*
A Star Danced by Bratanimus – a Remus/Tonks story with great characterizations, an unusual setting, real plot along with the romance, and some brilliant ideas about the nature of Metamorphmagism

* nevernevergirl (fragilesymphony):
Winter Alone Reminds Us of the Human Condition – Tonks and Remus, navigating the painful HBP period, when they both want to be together and yet aren't together. This author writes Tonks like I've never quite seen her, tough and modern and real and complex, suffering and yet no damsel in distress. I really, really like it.
And We Are in Bed Together, Laughing – Remus, daring to let himself start to fall in love, and maybe even contemplate the possibility of being happy.

* the ersatz diplomat:
Sweet Beginnings – a delightful non-magic AU in which Tonks is a barista, Remus is an author, and they meet by accident (without realizing they already have something in common: a mutual friend named Sirius)
Only What You Need – this struck me as very true to Remus and Tonks, the way they both keep their wry sense of humor even in the face of grief
Shine
– an AU of the first Christmas after the war, with Remus and Tonks at a ball in honor of the fallen

* Wild Magelet:
The Season Bright – in an AU where Voldemort never rose again after killing the Potters, Tonks and Remus nonetheless meet at Christmas at the Burrow
Hermione is Getting Married – Tonks, Ginny and Hermione get themselves arrested after Hermione's hen party, Remus comes to their aid

*
Conflict of Interest by Fernwithy – Tonks finds herself grappling with conflicting loyalties when she goes to visit Remus and finds him in sudden possession of a surprisingly intelligent, big, black stray dog (Fernwithy also has a wonderful series of Teddy-centric stories, starting with Teddy Lupin and the Forest Guard)

Between the Lines by Gilpin and Mrs Tater – Remus and Tonks fall in love by owl post

No More
by Mrs Tater – a sweet take on Tonks and Remus at the final battle, then arriving in the afterlife and finding peace (and Sirius and James and Lily)

* stories by Lady Bracknell, for example:
Kiss and Tell – fun story where Sirius is annoyed at having to put up with lovebirds Remus and Tonks…and accidentally brings home a banshee
Disaster, See also, Remus J Lupin, lovelife of – Remus' failed relationships over the years (until, of course, the one that doesn’t fail)
Stacked Against – Ron gets advice from Remus
The Birthday Boy – Teddy gets a letter from Remus and Tonks on his 17th birthday, and Harry understands

* stories by
Pandora Culpa, including Between the Bars – Tonks watching over Remus during his transformation

Amused, Impressed, Smitten by ElizaHiggs – short series with an interesting take on things like how Tonks would feel about meeting a werewolf the first time, and what it's like for Remus to finally allow himself to relax into a relationship that includes sex.

The Missing Piece of the Puzzle by Fics by Fumph – sweet little R/T wedding scene

Life After Wartime by daylightsparks – Remus, Tonks, sex and zombies. Post-war AU, of course.

* stories by Setissma:
Faded Photographs – Remus and Tonks bond over cleaning out the attic of 12 Grimmauld Place
The Taste of Apples – Remus falls for Tonks at first because she's like Sirius, but then for who she is herself. (One of the rare stories where I’m able to stomach an author positing that Remus only starts being interested in Tonks because she reminds him of Sirius.)

Clinical Lycanthropy by loneraven – Muggle AU where Remus' lycanthropy is a type of schizophrenia, and Tonks meets him while doing community service

Remus and Tonks: A Love Story by Kerrymdb – cute little story where Harry and the other kids speculate about what brought Remus and Tonks together

The Rookie
by jncar – Tonks and Remus meet because she's the rookie Auror sent to interview him about his claims about Sirius' innocence

And belatedly it's occurred to me that maybe I should at least mention my own many, many Remus/Tonks fics... So here are fics by starfishstar! My canon-era epic covering OotP and HBP is here: Be the Light in My Lantern. And the entire collection of my R/T stories is here: The Remus/Tonks Stories.

Livejournal used to have many communities where people posted Remus/Tonks fic; unfortunately, most are no longer active, but you can still go and read all the fic that was posted there! This was before my time in fandom, so I'm not as well versed in those comms, but it seems the main one was metamorfic_moon
and its fic archive metamorphed_fic. There was also [livejournal.com profile] wolfandlady.

One Remus/Tonks comm is still active as of this writing, though! [community profile] rt_morelove
hosts a prompt-based fic-writing event each winter, and it’s a really friendly, welcoming event.

[NOTE: Since this is my "Remus recs" page, any stories that are Tonks-centric but not specifically Remus/Tonks aren't here...they're in the "Tonks-centric" section of my
general recs page instead!]

REMUS/SIRIUS

• stories by rosemaryandrue, especially
Pilgrimage – Remus undertakes a solo winter pilgrimage as he tries to make sense of the events of Halloween 1981. A classic.
• everything in the "
Rising Storm Universe" collection of stories, especially As Red as Hearts and Autumn, and Winter of Discontent; also Reservoirs, and Old Adventurers
Victory at All Costs – 1940s AU: Remus is interred on the Isle of Man… Worth it even just for the delightful image of Sirius helping the Muggle war effort as a fighter pilot!

• everything by Sam Starbuck (aka Copperbadge), including
Stealing Harry and the sequel Laocoon's Children – Sam's masterwork that parallels canon, but in an AU where Sirius never went to Azkaban, and he and Remus rescue Harry from the Dursleys and raise him as their son. A huge fic, but worth it. (Sam eventually discontinued the series as he grew disenchanted with the later HP books, but he provides detailed notes on where he would have taken the series, so it still feels complete.)
Pilgrimage – the Marauders on a mission/roadtrip; memorable for a card game they play that hints at Peter's power, but no one quite realizes it at the time
Better than a Bobble Hat – Sirius, James and Peter's big reveal to Remus of how they learned to be Animagi for him
Five Ways Sirius Black Didn't Lie Low at Lupin's (And One Way He Did) – Sam’s lovely take on the lie-low-at-Lupin’s trope/genre
Alive – a Bring Back Black story in which Remus first thinks he's hallucinating Sirius' return

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by penknife – lovely, windswept, gothic AU, in which Remus arrives at Black Manor to serve as a private tutor to Harry, godson of the moody lord of the manor, Sirius Black

• stories by kaydeefalls, especially
Logical Deduction – cute story in which Sirius solves the mystery of What the Fuck Happened Last Night (hint: it involves Remus), over the course of James and Lily's wedding
'Twas Brillig and the Slithy Toves – Marauders past and Weasleys present, heirs to the Map through Remus' eyes
Sidekicks – Remus and Peter are the ones who give the Marauders' Map a voice
The Centre Cannot Hold – Remus/Sirius and Lily/James during the war
The Love Song of Sirius Black – falling through the Veil, Sirius remembers the ways things didn’t happen, and visits Remus in a dream

• all stories by
Canis M, but especially A Fearsome Business – THIS is my very favorite "Lie Low at Lupin's" story. Remus, living in a cabin by a remote tarn, takes in an exhausted Sirius post-GoF, though neither of them has any idea where their relationship stands now. Plus a fantastic plot about a kelpie preying on a little girl in the nearby village. It's technically unfinished, but it doesn't matter because it ends well enough where it is.

Night Travels by earlybloomingparentheses – trying to find their way back together, Remus and Sirius discover something sinister in 12 Grimmaul Place. A moving examination of what it's like to love someone who's changed so much, with elements of magic that uncover deeper truths about Remus and Sirius themselves.

• stories by kest, including
Three Days – Remus and Sirius making things work in their new life at Grimmauld Place
A Glorious War – Remus and Sirius on an Order mission

The Active Reader by veeagainst – "When a craze for pulpy romance novels about Dark Creatures starts in Gryffindor, Sirius reads one about a werewolf -- and decides to write a better one." i.e., a story that's both a lovely little Remus/Sirius romance in its own right AND a commentary on representations of "otherness" in literature – i.e., a parody that's far more than a parody, and sweet and smart to boot.

The King of Wolves by ballyharnon – a crossover with Sandman (though you don't have to have read it, I hadn't) and also kind of with Dante's Inferno, in which Remus travels through the circles of Hell to rescue Sirius. Strange, brilliant, full of dreams and myths and symbolism, hard to explain but powerful.

A Touch of Genius by a_merry_chase – AU in which Remus is a testy, chronically ill computer genius, Sirius is his flatmate, Tonks is someone they meet in a coffeeshop who's being targeted by an anti-government conspiracy, and things get crazier from there. Fabulous characterizations, AU parallels that work, Remus/Sirius with eventual Remus/Sirius/Tonks…no, trust me.

Six Lies Remus Lupin Never Told by xylodemon – the lies Remus tells others and himself

• stories by
such_heights, who has R/S stories, as well as gen stories about less common characters, wonderful Neville, Luna, Marauders, Regulus

• various stories by
Victoria P., aka musesfool, for fun R/S UST-and-romance, especially Two Weaknesses – Lily POV, as she schemes to get Remus and Sirius to just finally get together already; also many more cute R/S stories: The Love There That's Sleeping, You Showed Me, Something Borrowed, etc.

A Lie Gets Halfway Around the School Before the Truth Has a Chance to Get Its Pants On by midnightmaraud_r – a potions class accident has Remus saying all his thoughts out loud – including just how he feels about Sirius

So You Want to Transfigure Yourself a Rock Band by Mousapelli – your classic 1970s R/S, with glam and Sirius in eyeliner and the boys starting a rock band. I also enjoyed the author's with-commentary version of the story, about how she was just trying to write a fluffy little piece about Remus pining after Sirius, but Remus would not play along, and she spent pages and pages trying to get Remus in bed with Sirius, and still Remus would find excuses not to be there...

That the Science of Cartography Is Limited by dorkorific – Remus alone and reminiscing after OotP

These Feet, They Walk Me Back to You by laurificus – after falling through the veil, Sirius is given three chances to go back and make it right

A Store of Happiness by coyotesuspect – the summer after third year, Harry goes to live with Sirius and Professor Lupin; from his young perspective, Harry doesn't realize at first that there may be something more between these two old friends... This is exactly the alternate ending you wanted for Prisoner of Azkaban.

rumor has it by punkaspadfoot – a fun and feel-good AU in which Remus, Sirius, James and Lily are all teachers, and the students are convinced that Mr. Black and Mr. Lupin hate each other...

Beyond the Veil by Helene – Sirius is trapped between worlds, Remus and Harry research mirror and dream magic, Remus goes into the mirrorworld to bring Sirius back

World Without End by kitestringer – Dumbledore watches Remus missing Sirius, and remembers Grindelwald

Nightly Sings the Starring Owl by ohkaye – Peter helps Sirius conjure the year's first snow for Remus. R/S; lovely, bittersweet, with a Sirius who can't stand how Peter is already pulling away.

Sex and Dying in High Society by fluorescentgrey – Sirius and Remus falling for each other amidst war and 1970s punk music

• stories by
librae – lots of quiet, atmospheric R/S, cute drabbles

Wassail, Wassail by brighty18 – sweet, fun story of R/S in disguise as wassailers, to steal a house elf

The Secret Christmas Plan by peskywhistpaw – adorable story about the "Great Hall Incident of 1975," R/S as told in James' "Captain's Log"

Seven Things That Didn't Happen on Valentine's Day At Hogwarts, Or Maybe They Did by rageprufrock – a silly, fun R/S romp

And A Star To Steer Her By by ceredwensirius – Remus/Sirius romance in an AU where they're all pirates :-)

Heroes for Ghosts by trinsy – James' ghost haunts Remus over the years

The Sweetest Thing by Alvira – sweet R/S UST while staying in Diagon Alley over the summer

Adventures in Astronomy by mindabbles – sweet little R/S story; "Sirius has lost his book. James, Lily, and Peter think he may have also lost his mind."

Receipts of Our Hellos by kyasuriin – AU in which Remus moves to NYC, and meets James and Lily's friend Sirius

You're my land, ahoy by batmanboxers – Hee hee. Remus and Sirius are space pirates.

Sturdy Hiking Boots (and Other Warm Things) by peskywhistpaw – Sirius takes Remus to see Hippogriffs

Advice for the Momentarily Blinded by sheafrotherdon – Sirius sets out to find a Perfect Present for Remus

The Twisted Sister Affair by neutrinofics – Remus and Sirius just out of school and trying to set themselves up as private detectives, but with little clue what they're doing

Darling, in My Fashion by toujours_nigel – five different AU vignettes set in different eras, of "Remus Lupin keeps falling into bed with Sirius Black"

Redeeming Time by minx – James POV, November to November 6th to 7th year, of The Prank aftermath, the Marauders growing up, Remus/Sirius, start of James/Lily

Our Private Universe by busaikko – Peter plants doubts about Remus in Sirius' mind / and the author's more hopeful version of the same time period: Chocolate

This is the Life by 1electricpirate – AU where Sirius & Remus met as boys but Remus never went to Hogwarts; Sirius becomes an uptight politician and Remus a dangerously hedonistic callboy, but they meet again

The Art of Walking Backwards by sharpest_rose – lovely story of Remus casting a spell to bring Sirius back and getting James and Lily too

Door to the River by minx – another sweet story where Remus goes beyond the veil to bring Sirius back from the not-quite-dead

Adagio by sable_tyger – a painful and beautiful story of all the times Remus and Sirius didn’t say “I love you” over the years…until Sirius comes to lie low at Lupin’s.

Sticky by krabapple – Sirius leaves sticky notes all over Grimmauld Place where he notes down his memories as they come back to him piecemeal, post-Azkaban; at first Remus finds it annoying, but then it leads to something more

Belatedly, it's also occurred to me to mention my own Remus/Sirius fics – too many to list here, but they include for example: On a Windswept Cliff (gothic romance AU), The Fall of the House of Black (fusion with Edgar Allan Poe), Northern Sky (romantic Remus and Sirius under the northern lights), Hangover Cures (Marauder-era cuteness), Dust and Soot and Silence (Sirius family angst, counterbalanced by R/S feeling), Fantastic Beasts and How to Win Their Hearts: A Retelling of Beauty and the Beast (co-written with stereolightning).

• And in general, for more R/S check out shackinup-sesa
or rs-small-gifts for more; and the wonderful [community profile] rs_games are still going strong!

In fact, I'm updating this list to add...

My favorite fics (and art) from the RS Games 2014:
Oh, We Lost Magic by nerak_rose – an AU where you can't quite tell at first if it's Muggle or magic, but weird stuff keeps happening... A different way the war could have gone, written in a great just-slightly-surreal style.
Or, a Portrait of the Mathematician as a Young Man by zambla – historical AU where Remus is a Jewish atheist mathematician, Sirius' family supports the fascists, and they're all at Cambridge; an excellently researched story with shades of Forster and Wilde
No Subtitles Available by huldrejenta – Muggle AU where Sirius and James are radio DJs, and Remus and Sirius fall in love; the Muggle-world parallel for Remus' lycanthropy is very well done here, as is the parallel for the canon storyline of betrayal and Sirius suspecting Remus
Evenings, Mornings, Afternoons by illittorate – Muggle AU where Remus works at the coffee shop where Sirius and James hang out
Wolf and Hound: The Case of the Baker Street Murders by carmentakoshi – an AU and sort of a fusion with Sherlock, where Remus and Sirius (as Padfoot!) are magical consultants with the police
Dog of Darkness, Dog of Light by stereolightning – Sirius gets through the melancholy that the holiday season brings about in him, with the help of his friends
Sense Memory by pica_scribit – Sirius experiencing color and his senses for the first time after having just swum ashore from Azkaban
The Effect of a Kiss (video/art/text/music) by chibitoaster – Sirius, hiding out on a tropical island post-Azkaban, is overwhelmed by his senses now that he's in the world again, and Remus comes to help him focus...on him. Sexy, lovely and very impressively put together.
Static (art) by dustmouth – an entire novel's worth of poetic story told in the form of a comic/graphic novel
The Psychopomp (art) by epithalamium – an AU with fantastic use of color for the magical world, black and white for Muggle
We Might Fall by queenkerosene – Sirius, just after the Veil, is given the option to try to rewrite/undo his life...but it may not be a good thing if he succeeds
Between the Moon and the Stars by llassah – Remus and Sirius fall in love over the course of a lazy, beautiful summer
The Wish to Move Backward by toujoursnigel – this fic throws the reader into an unfamiliar world of OCs without explanation, but it works; Remus is in France with Order contacts when he gets the news about James and Lily – but he hasn't heard yet about Sirius
Ocean Above & Sky Below by grandilloquism – trying to figure out his life, Sirius rents a gigantic cottage by the sea with his friends; an AU where Sirius is still in touch with his family after Hogwarts
Leave the Children Behind by cevennes – a novel-length exploration of Remus after 1981, and then Remus and Sirius slowly rebuilding their relationship during the Lie Low at Lupin's period
Therapy (Fighting for a Wasted Love) by hikarievandar – an AU where Sirius was pardoned after Azkaban, but still has to work through the psychological trauma of all he's been through
Lies, Truths, and Other Confessions by mustntgetmy – Sirius aimless after the war, Remus being there for him
Within White Space by mustntgetmy – Muggle AU where Sirius is gorgeous and rich, and Remus thinks he can't possibly be good enough for him

My favorite fics from the RS Games 2015:
They Call It Black Fire by adistantsun – a gorgeous story set in a small Australian mining town
Canis Major, or The Babysitting Story by carmentakoshi – cute yet subtly sad/foreshadowy glimpse of Sirius chatting away to baby Harry
Mapmaker by zambla – Muggle historical AU, where Remus and Sirius meet in Cairo during WWII, where they're a geographer and a pilot respectively – based on real accounts of gay soldiers during that time. Not a happy ending, but beautifully evocative of the place and well-researched.
fell in love once and almost completely by llassah – AU where Sirius, not Remus, is the one who was bitten as a child
Grand Jeté by huldrejenta – Sirius comforting Remus after a full moon
No Longer Easy on the Eyes by nerak_rose – fun Muggle AU where Remus and Teddy both have lycanthropy, and Sirius is out of prison and raising Harry, and somehow it all works out

My favorite fics (and art) from the RS Games 2017:
FIC:
Devil’s Bridge by veeagainst – Such a stunning AU, set in a dystopian, terrifyingly plausible present-day world, with extraordinary world-building and wonderful characterization of Sirius and Remus as they fight back in a fascist, post-Voldemort UK. Full to the brim with love and the intensity of the bond between Remus and Sirius, through and despite it all.
The Truth in Potions by shaggydogstail – A glorious, nearly novel-length canon-divergent AU that develops not just Sirius and Remus, but all the friendships and relationships around them (James and Lily. The best James and Lily!) through the war years and beyond, giving Remus and Sirius a chance to fix the mutual mistrust between them before it leads to fatal events like it does in canon.
A Duet by mustntgetmy – Beautifully, masterfully written. The rare case of a fic I was glad to read despite the character death in it, because it showed so well that what mattered was that their love existed, regardless of how long it could or couldn't last. Also excels in its portrayal of the day-to-day crushing weight of living through wartime. And descriptions of playing music together.
Retrial by phoenixgal – AU where Remus is a podcast host investigating Sirius Black’s (possibly mistaken) imprisonment. Amazing execution of such a creative premise!
Watch Me Go Blind by lefthandofglory and ruinsplume – An incredibly, richly thought-out exploration of what it’s actually like to be a werewolf (and to love a werewolf). I personally don’t generally seek out explicit fics, but here the explicit and extensive sex was absolutely integral to the plot and the emotions of the story. Really impressive. The author’s take, too, on what Sirius’ experiences as Padfoot are like is amazingly detailed and well thought out.
Hiraeth by llassah – A beautiful story that starts out with an excellent exploration of what Order work and spying must have been like for Remus, and then gradually, cleverly goes AU. Threaded all the way through is Remus’ longing for a peaceful, bucolic life that may or may not actually exist.
the time when you were mine by renaissance – Set over the course of one all-important hour, as Sirius walks across the city to meet Remus to watch the sunrise. Modern, Muggle AU that deftly mixes texting (Marauders’ group chat!), phone calls, in-person conversation, and of course Sirius' own thoughts. Lovely, sweet and funny.
Alone in Space by toyhto – AU in the future where they’re both space scientists, and when something happens to Sirius, Remus has to figure out how to travel back to him. Beautiful and moving.
Eclipse Season by theheartischill – An extraordinarily insightful, in-character portrayal of Sirius, struggling with all his rage and frustration in his teen years, trying to be “better” for his friends. All of the characterization, dialogue and inner monologue are just so perfectly in character.
Heart and Soul by shiftylinguini – The author takes what could be a clichéd trope (sex potion!) and creates something very original with it, as both Remus and Sirius are forced to let go of the way they’ve been withholding their deeper, more vulnerable emotions from each other.
Obelus by theemdash – A compelling story of how the canonical mistrust grew between Sirius and Remus in the first war, starting with Sirius’ grief over Regulus’ death, Remus trying to protect Sirius, and Peter’s machinations.
The Magical Tale of One Man and His Dog by snakeowls/rj31 – Told fairytale style, Sirius falls through the veil and lands back in 1981 with a chance to do things better, save James and Lily, and live a happy life with Remus – who becomes a primary school teacher!
Caught by phiso_kun – Fun AU where Sirius is a thief and Remus a detective he becomes smitten with.
This Word Lies at the Bottom of a Lake by berhanes – A gentle look at Sirius leaving his family, reconciling with Remus after the Prank, and grappling with his feelings about his brother.
Bubblegum Blues by lesbiansirius – Sweet and happy AU where Sirius and Remus are both trans women and meet again after having known each other years ago, when Sirius is sent to review Remus’ band.
Just Smoke by lindsaylaurie – The Marauders on a trip to Amsterdam, bookended by Remus and Sirius taking a much soberer, but wiser, trip to Amsterdam during canon.
Triptych by littlemo – Three quietly in-character glimpses of moments where there was something Remus was struggling with, and Sirius helped him in a direct or indirect way.
Hope & Legacy: Black Brothers Edition by epithalamium and nerakrose – AU where Sirius and Remus are married, and Sirius and Regulus are both top magical figure skaters, with a nice, humorous touch.
A Fire Shared by fatpalomino – A lovely set of small scenes showing Remus facing his loneliness and his loss.
love please don’t leave me evermore by grandilloquism – Remus sets about assembling the influences he needs (including Walburga Black!) to bring Sirius home from Azkaban.
The Importance of Being Sirius by dogsunderfoot – A charming little AU where Remus is a literature teacher and Sirius is the charismatic, unconventional (and very loud) history teacher next door.
Colours by luminousgloom – The day of their anniversary, in an AU where they survived the war. Shifts seamlessly between Sirius’ reminiscences of that day 20 years ago, and him now, finding the best way to mark the day with Remus.
ART:
The sun always comes by shigai – Four gorgeously detailed images that together tell just about everything you could want to know about Remus’ life, his love for Sirius, and the deep camaraderie between the Marauders.
A Day Like Any Other by dustmouth – A great mix of whimsy and serious emotions. (Also: the wonderful absurdity that is James Potter!)
Stargazing by sys13 – A lovely portrait of Sirius and Remus, in a contented moment looking out at the stars from Gryffindor Tower.

REMUS GEN

• everything by Sam Starbuck! including:
Civilised – Remus comforts everyone, because it's what a wolf wouldn't do
Forgive – a Remus story about lycanthropy, the search for a cure, and learning to forgive himself
Owl Post – Remus and Harry communicate by letter
In Another Season – "Remus Lupin had good reason to tell the Order to go fuck themselves."

• stories by such_heights, including:
Here Comes the Sun – Remus in hospital, recovering his memory after the war
Order Out of Chaos – "Dumbledore has an Order to create, Moody has Aurors to train, and four young men need to decide what they're doing with their lives."
Beginnings of the Order – shows the Marauders' various motivations for joining the Order

The Die Is Cast by stereolightning – After Hogwarts but before Harry, James and Lily invite Remus to live with them, and for eight lovely weeks he steps out of his own life and does.

The Quiet and the Dark by miss_morland – Remus and Madam Rosmerta find solace in talking about their respective lost lovers

Five Signs of the Werewolf by ElizaHiggs – Remus teaches the third years their lesson on werewolves, and Hermione has questions.

A Dangerous Man by kennahijja – the Lestranges' trial stirs up old pain for Remus, and he has a tense run-in with Lucius Malfoy

Defence against the Dark Creature by Allemande – Remus teaching at a school for werewolf children

REMUS OTHER PAIRINGS

The Dark Side of the Moon by snorkackcatcher – past Remus/OFC. Remus takes a paternal interest in Luna Lovegood. (I think the author deliberately makes this sound creepy in the summary, but it's decidedly not!)

• stories by Sam Starbuck, including
The Bowl of Lilacs – Remus/Lily, but as an affair while she's also with James – well-written, but a painful one to read
Three Galleons – Hermione/Snape, with a side of Hermione/Snape/Remus threesome…no, really. It somehow works, because it's Sam.
Being the First – written for the prompt "I dare you to write a Remus/Harry and make it not be wrong." Again, only Sam!
Learning to Knock – Harry keeps walking in on…Remus/everyone. (Because Sam loves Remus so much, he likes letting him have sex with everybody.)

The Most Ridiculous First Name I've Ever Heard by mousapelli – a chilling little reflection on the idea that lycanthropy expresses itself as HIV when it infects Muggles

The Rules of Being a Godson by Sam Starbuck – "Teddy Lupin never gets too close or feels too much; his godfather's son never does anything else" – a story about Teddy, not Remus, but relevant because Sam draws deliberate parallels between Remus and Teddy, and Sirius and next-gen James Sirius
