This is wonderful! I love the whimsical details in the joke shop, plus the contrast that's implied with the bleak reality of the war. I also like the way Kingsley takes to Lee, and the means he finds for testing Lee's mettle.
But my very favorite detail may be the way Kingsley has stopped being so jumpy by the end of the scene. *sniff*
