Fic Fic Fic, Life
Nov. 18th, 2017 08:09 pmRS Games reveals are up! I still have about 20 of the 66 (!) entries to look at, but I'll post some recs once I've finished.
I wasn't even going to participate in this year's Games (no time!!), but when they said this would be the last year of the fest...well. Then I had to, and I'm glad I did. I wrote something I almost surely wouldn't have written otherwise, and it feels good to be part of such a positive, inclusive fest, even if I wasn't able to participate much in the discussions and such (no time!).
My fic (The Fall of the House of Black) is a fusion of Remus/Sirius/the events of canon with Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher." I mean, what could be a better match than the extreme dramatic-ness of Sirius Black and the extreme gothic-ness of Edgar Allan Poe? It was fun. :-) I'm also laughing at myself, because apparently I've found the Remus/Sirius themes I can't help coming back to... This latest story is basically the "but what if things didn't have to go the way they did for Regulus in canon, and Sirius and Remus got a chance to help him?" of my previous RS Games fic, A Constellation's Just a Picture in the Sky, combined with the "retelling the events and themes of Prisoner of Azkaban in an AU" of Fantastic Beasts and How to Win Their Hearts, wrapped up in the gothic romance sensibility of On a Windswept Cliff. Also, it amuses me how often Regulus manages to sneak into my Remus/Sirius fics. Apparently my Sirius has a lot of feelings about having left his brother behind, and wants a chance to make it right. :-)
I'm also proud of my other recent R/S fic, Northern Sky. I wanted to push myself to write something sexier than I usually do (sexy is really, really not my strength, so the kisses in my fics usually end as soon as they begin – but not this time!) and I'm pleased with it. Plus, it's inspired by watching the northern lights in Iceland. Because many of the highlights of my summer involved watching the northern lights in Iceland.
Now my fandom life transitions abruptly from the RS Games, which just finished posting, to Holmestice, where the deadline is in a just a few days. Here, too, I really didn't have the time to do another fest, but Holmestice is such a great experience, and I couldn't not.

I want to post about my recent travels, which included a bit of fannish stuff, but it will have to wait... I have so much coursework, and I'm not as caught up as I want to be.
For now, I'll leave you with this accidentally-Harry-Potter-themed sight, spotted in Aberdeen:

Professor Lockhart Gardens!!
In my mind, I've renamed it The Garden of Self-Aggrandizement and Acute Memory Loss.
