Same! I started writing Remus/Tonks because of how much I love Remus, but have learned so much about Tonks by writing about her.
It's hard to remember at this point (four years later...) but I think writing this story started out of some mixture of 1) curiosity about what the adults were doing "offstage" while the narrative was with Harry; 2) fascination with Remus, obviously; and 3) exactly what you say: a conviction that the snippets JKR shows us in HBP don't line up in the least with Tonks' character as we learned it in OotP, and finding that frustrating, and wanting to do better by Tonks.
My plans have me back in the US by sometime next month, so maybe we'll cross paths on that side of the world someday. :-)
