HAPPY BIRTHDAY, [livejournal.com profile] shimotsuki! Thanks for inspiring us all with your Kaleidoscope stories, for bringing us together as a community in places like [livejournal.com profile] rt_morelove, and for being such a supportive friend and reader of others' stories. As soon as JKR announced that Sirius Black shared a birthday with you, I knew I had to write you something for the day…it was simply a question of what. Hope you enjoy!

Sirius Black and the Case of the Missing Dirigible Plums

Summary: There’s a mystery afoot in Gryffindor Tower, and Sirius is going to get to the bottom of it: Who stole the dirigible plums?

Characters: Sirius Black, James Potter, Lily Evans

Words: ca. 2,500

Notes: Happy birthday, shimotsuki! This fic is for you, who share a very special birthday with one Sirius Black. As I pondered “What Can I Write About That’s Sirius-Centric And Shimotsuki Will Enjoy?” I thought of your love of mystery stories, and our shared appreciation of Dorothy L. Sayers’ books. And I had a very silly idea.

Characters belong to J.K. Rowling; plot elements shamelessly and zanily lifted from “Talboys” by Dorothy L. Sayers. (Forgive me for leaving out the snake and the child-rearing debates...but you’ll find most of the rest intact!)

RELENTLESS SUNSHINE

Summary:
Sometimes, the young have wisdom for the old. A rare sunny moment in the Order of the Phoenix.

Characters: Mad-Eye Moody, Lily Evans Potter

Words: 760

Notes: For the [livejournal.com profile] rs_games' ficlet activity; I’m not even playing in the Games this year, but I can never seem to resist a prompt. Mine was Mad-Eye Moody + Lily Evans Potter + the phrase “relentless sunshine.” (And yes, I realized belatedly I’d read the prompting chart wrong, and my secondary character was supposed to be Albus Dumbledore, not Lily. Oh well, at least he got a mention in the fic!)

First Kiss

FIRST KISS

Summary:
Perhaps the best part about a first kiss is telling a best friend.

Characters: Sirius Black, Remus Lupin (gen; Sirius/OC)

Words: 445

Notes:

Dear [livejournal.com profile] huldrejenta, happy birthday! You are a pleasure to know. I saw your prompts at the [livejournal.com profile] sirius_black comment fest, and thought I’d use those as inspiration to write you something for your birthday. I’m betting this is not at all what you intended when you wrote this prompt, but I hope you enjoy it anyway! Just a small bit of silliness, really.

The original prompt was:

Prompt: First kiss
Optional prompt: Rain, curfew, Remus

BROTHERS

Summary:
Brothers choose each other. Always.

Characters: Sirius Black, James Potter, Regulus Black

Words: ~400

Notes: Tangentially inspired by something [livejournal.com profile] huldrejenta wrote ("Brother") and more directly inspired by [livejournal.com profile] gracerene’s comment on that story.

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] stereolightning for giving this a beta-read!

SHARP LIGHTNING AGAINST A DANGEROUS SKY

Summary: They meet again on a wide, muddy plain in Belgium where millennia of battles have been fought.

(Albus Dumbledore, Gellert Grindelwald, and the duel.)

Characters: Albus Dumbledore, Gellert Grindelwald

Words: ~3,800

Notes: Separate from the three stories in the "Golden, Ripe and Rotten" series, but thematically related.

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] stereolightning for beta reading!

THE ROTTEN CORE
(Part 3 of Golden, Ripe and Rotten)

Summary: And still, for one endless second, Albus thinks Gellert might say, I’ll stay.

Characters: Albus Dumbledore, Gellert Grindelwald

Words: ~1,000

Notes: “Did I know, in my heart of hearts, what Gellert Grindelwald was? I think I did, but I closed my eyes.” – Albus Dumbledore, Chapter 35 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] stereolightning for beta-reading!

RIPE AS SUMMER QUINCES
(Part 2 of Golden, Ripe and Rotten)

Summary: “Albus, my white knight,” Gellert said, and something in Albus’ chest loosened and blossomed, as it always did when Gellert spoke those words. “What shall we do today, with all the world at our feet?”

Characters: Albus Dumbledore, Gellert Grindelwald, Aberforth Dumbledore, Ariana Dumbledore

Words: ~2,700

Notes: This is part 2 of a series of 3 stories about young Dumbledore and Grindelwald, from beginning to end of the summer they knew each other in Godric’s Hollow. Part 1 of the series is “Sharp and Bright against a Golden Sky.”

This is a (slightly) revised version from the one I originally posted. (The original one was here.) Nothing too major’s changed, just a few threads I wanted to highlight a little more, to make this a better set-up for the upcoming story #3. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] stereolightning, [livejournal.com profile] huldrejenta and [livejournal.com profile] gilpin25 for commenting and tossing around ideas with me!

IN THE WRONG HOUSE

Summary:

Sirius Black, Remus thought, was just as arrogant and annoying as James Potter, and he wished the two of them would stop getting into fights. Because Remus kept finding himself stepping in to stop them, and calling that kind of attention to himself was really the last thing he needed during his first year at Hogwarts.

It didn't matter if they were unpredictable Blacks or show-off Potters, or even someone harmless like Peter Pettigrew. None of these boys could be his friends, and it was time Remus started remembering it.

He didn't mind, Remus told himself. He didn't need friends.

Characters: Remus, James, Sirius, Peter and supporting cast

Words: ~21,000

Story:

Chapter One
Chapter Two
Chapter Three
Chapter Four
Chapter Five
Chapter Six
Chapter Seven + Epilogue

Story also available on AO3.

Words: ~2,400

Notes: This is part two of a series of three stories about young Dumbledore and Grindelwald, from beginning to end of the summer they knew each other in Godric’s Hollow. The first part is “Sharp and Bright against a Golden Sky.”

SHARP AND BRIGHT AGAINST A GOLDEN SKY

Summary: Gellert was gilded, aureate, bedazzling, resplendent; he was aureolin pigment on a blinding canvas, rays of light through beads of amber, stalks of goldenrod against a sunlit sky. And Albus Dumbledore had never before thought he needed a thesaurus just to talk about the evidence of his own eyes.

Characters: Albus Dumbledore, Gellert Grindelwald

Words: ~750

Notes: I’d been thinking vaguely about these two characters anyway, and then [livejournal.com profile] huldrejenta specifically asked for stories about them, and I was happy to comply! I think this might eventually be part one out of three, but we’ll see.

Update! This is now the first of three in series called "Golden, Ripe and Rotten." Link to the second story at the end.

NEVER SAY NEVER NEVER

Summary: Remus makes Sirius watch his first Muggle film. The experience is less horrible than predicted.

Characters/Pairing: Remus/Sirius, James/Lily, Peter

Rating: PG

Words: ~2,700

Notes: Set during the Christmas holidays of seventh year, late 1977.

I wrote this as a just-in-case back-up story for the [livejournal.com profile] rs_games, to have on hand if Team Muggle needed more pinch-hits. Team Muggle ended up being fine, luckily, so now this story just is. The prompt I wrote it for was #28 here – a picture of a cosy room with a fireplace.

This story isn’t my headcanon of Remus/Sirius, even if I had a headcanon of Remus/Sirius, which I don’t think I do. It’s just an idea that seemed like fun. :-)

SHIPWRECK AGAINST YOUR EYES

Summary: Remus was the most beautiful puzzle Sirius could ever hope to meet, a solid cliff rising out of the chaos of Sirius’ life, his smile a beacon against which Sirius would gladly shipwreck his heart a thousand times and more.

Written for the 2014 Remus/Sirius Games.

Characters/Pairing: Remus/Sirius

Rating: PG

Words: ~2,000

HANGOVER CURES

Summary: Listening to Remus pottering about in the kitchen, Sirius wondered how on Earth he’d managed to land the sort of man who would make him toast and bring him Muggle sports drinks after he’d been fool enough to challenge James to a contest of who could taste the most types of gin.

Written for the 2014 Remus/Sirius Games.

Characters/Pairing: Sirius/Remus

Rating: PG

Words: ~2,100

SIRIUS...BLACK (SIX DRABBLES)

Summary: Sirius Black, and the most important people in his life. Six moments.

Characters: Sirius, Remus, James, Peter, Lily, Harry, the Black family

Rating: T / PG-13 (no pairings, but mentions of violence, grief, death, all that canon stuff)

Words: 6 x 100

Notes: This is a little challenge I set myself – six drabbles (each 100 words precisely), each set five years apart, each starting with "Sirius" and ending with "Black" – for “The Day of the Black Dog,” a Sirius-centric event happening today over at the [livejournal.com profile] sirius_black community. Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] huldrejenta for pointing me to that event!

Each heading shows Sirius' age/the year, and the person who's the focus of the drabble.

A NEW WORLD BURSTING INTO BLOOM
(second half of the story; continues from the first half)

Summary:

“Andromeda Black, I like you.” Ted grinned. “You want to go to Hogsmeade together next weekend?”

“What? No,” Andromeda said. “Wait, what are you asking me?”

Was he laughing at her? She was quite sure he was laughing at her. “I’m asking you if you want to go to Hogsmeade with me.”

“I – no. I’m sorry.” Andromeda winced as she said it, but she couldn’t think of a kinder way to reject him. She walked away wondering what in Merlin’s name made him think that was a reasonable thing to ask.

It was only much later, after the lights in the dormitory were out, that it occurred to Andromeda to wonder what made her think it wasn’t.

Characters: Andromeda, Ted, various Black family members

Rating: PG-13 for brief mentions of sex between consenting teenagers

Words: ~11,000

Notes: The idea for this story was initially inspired by MandyinKC, who has called Ted the "great unseen character" in my Andromeda stories – crucial to the story, yet always just offstage. I wanted to give Ted his chance to appear onstage, too!

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] stereolightning for beta-reading!

Oh, and I don't think I've ever thought to say this, but everything I post here can also be found at AO3 – under the same user name, starfishstar – if you prefer reading stories there. This story, for example, is here.

HOLD TIGHT AND ALMOST BELIEVE

Summary:
Hope Lupin adjusts to her family’s new reality.

Characters: Hope Lupin, Lyall Lupin, Remus Lupin

Words: ~2,400

Notes: Yup, yup, it’s my first little nod towards starting to acknowledge the existence and somewhat-canonicity of the Pottermore bio…

This one is for [livejournal.com profile] stereolightning, who in recent conversations got me thinking about Hope. And about hope with a small “h” as well.

CAST YOUR SOUL TO THE SEA

Summary:
On a boat leaving England, Remus is not as alone as he thinks. (A sequel, of sorts, to "Skellig, Azkaban, Albion, Éire.")

Characters: Remus, Lily (in Remus' memory)

Words: ~950

Notes: While writing “Skellig, Azkaban, Albion, Éire,” which was initially inspired by a Loreena McKennitt song, I also listened to a lot of Loreena McKennitt, to be in the right atmosphere for the writing. Literally moments after finishing tweaking the last few words of that story, I heard the lyrics of the song I had currently playing – and this story happened.

This follows on directly from the end of "Skellig, Azkaban, Albion, Éire."

SKELLIG, AZKABAN, ALBION, ÉIRE

Summary:
Sirius sometimes thought the ceaseless crash of the waves was the only thing that kept him sane. / Remus found himself drawn to the far-flung edges, the places where the world seemed to drop into the sea.

Characters: Sirius, Remus

Words: 1,300
