LITTLE AMUSEMENTS, OR HOW ANTHEA GOT HER NAME

Fandom:
BBC Sherlock

Summary:

She made up secret personas each day to keep from going mad with boredom at her job. It amused her, and it didn’t matter since no one noticed anyway.

Until Mycroft Holmes noticed.

Characters: Anthea, Mycroft, original character

Words: 3,500

Notes: This is for [personal profile] indybaggins, who once said "I'd be curious to see how you portray Anthea," so ( . . . a little bit later . . . ) here she is.

I suppose I should further note – though it’s not hugely relevant for this particular story – that as a whole I’m pretty much ignoring the existence of S4 . . . so I’m writing the characters as they were around S1/S2-era or so. :-)

Thank you to [personal profile] pipmer1 for betareading!

IN TWENTY MINUTES

Fandom:
BBC Sherlock

Summary: After the hug, what then?

Characters: John, Sherlock

Words: 1,900

Notes: Ages ago [personal profile] pipmer1 left a prompt wanting to see “what happens between Sherlock and John right after that epic hug.” That stuck in my brain, and months later I’ve ended up writing my version of it…even though I’ve otherwise been trying valiantly to delete S4 from my brain entirely. ;-)

Thank you to [personal profile] indybaggins for betareading! We realized we were both writing fics about the exact same canon missing moment (though very different in tone) and decided to swap betaing. It was fun! And thanks as always to [personal profile] arianedevere, whose transcripts are a fandom resource and treasure.

Rated T for discussions of grief, and John’s swearing.

WAITING FOR THE SNOW

Summary: Four days. Victoire will be back from France in four days. Teddy can survive that...right?

Characters: Teddy, Victoire, Andromeda, Molly, Harry, one OC

Words: ~3,300

Notes: Here's the first one of the fics I wrote for this year's [livejournal.com profile] rt_morelove... It's Teddy/Victoire (and Teddy + all his wonderful extended family), with mentions of Remus and Tonks. FYI, I use my own headcanons for Teddy, so my stories don't necessarily align with JKR's latter-day Pottermore and/or Twitter revelations. I've also left the context here vague enough that it can be compatible with my Andromeda story "Saying Yes" (in which Teddy of course features prominently) if you want it to be!

This year at [livejournal.com profile] rt_morelove I found myself on this odd kick of trying to use as many of the prompts as I could (I got in 10 out of 30!), so this was written for:

21, Write a fic with 'If you are reading this' as your opening line
and also:
16, Teddy finds his parents' friends have very different tales to tell about them
26, the first snow
20 [picture of tranquil winter woods with sun setting through the trees]

I really wanted to take that sad sounding "If you are reading this" and turn it into something happy. :-)

HOLLY TO THE IVY

Fandom: BBC Sherlock

Summary:

It’s Christmas – Sherlock’s first Christmas home from uni – and neither Holmes brother needs anyone.

Definitely not.

Characters: Sherlock, Mycroft, and briefly Mummy Holmes

Words: ~2,700

Notes: To me, this completes the arc of my Mycroft and Sherlock stories – a series of one-shots about the two of them as kids/young adults that I'm now calling “Brothers, Bitter and Sweet.” This story can stand alone, or can be read as continuing the themes in those stories ("Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of Father Christmas," "The Truth Will Break Your Heart," "Shadow and Shade"). And I find it pleasingly congruent that this story is set at Christmas, and so was my very first Sherlock story, one year ago.

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] stereolightning for beta-reading!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, [livejournal.com profile] shimotsuki! Thanks for inspiring us all with your Kaleidoscope stories, for bringing us together as a community in places like [livejournal.com profile] rt_morelove, and for being such a supportive friend and reader of others' stories. As soon as JKR announced that Sirius Black shared a birthday with you, I knew I had to write you something for the day…it was simply a question of what. Hope you enjoy!

Sirius Black and the Case of the Missing Dirigible Plums

Summary: There’s a mystery afoot in Gryffindor Tower, and Sirius is going to get to the bottom of it: Who stole the dirigible plums?

Characters: Sirius Black, James Potter, Lily Evans

Words: ca. 2,500

Notes: Happy birthday, shimotsuki! This fic is for you, who share a very special birthday with one Sirius Black. As I pondered “What Can I Write About That’s Sirius-Centric And Shimotsuki Will Enjoy?” I thought of your love of mystery stories, and our shared appreciation of Dorothy L. Sayers’ books. And I had a very silly idea.

Characters belong to J.K. Rowling; plot elements shamelessly and zanily lifted from “Talboys” by Dorothy L. Sayers. (Forgive me for leaving out the snake and the child-rearing debates...but you’ll find most of the rest intact!)

RELENTLESS SUNSHINE

Summary:
Sometimes, the young have wisdom for the old. A rare sunny moment in the Order of the Phoenix.

Characters: Mad-Eye Moody, Lily Evans Potter

Words: 760

Notes: For the [livejournal.com profile] rs_games' ficlet activity; I’m not even playing in the Games this year, but I can never seem to resist a prompt. Mine was Mad-Eye Moody + Lily Evans Potter + the phrase “relentless sunshine.” (And yes, I realized belatedly I’d read the prompting chart wrong, and my secondary character was supposed to be Albus Dumbledore, not Lily. Oh well, at least he got a mention in the fic!)

SHADOW AND SHADE

Fandom: BBC Sherlock

Mycroft sighed. “Yes, yes, I’m sure you didn’t.”

Characters: Sherlock, Mycroft

FIRST KISS

Summary:
Perhaps the best part about a first kiss is telling a best friend.

Characters: Sirius Black, Remus Lupin (gen; Sirius/OC)

Words: 445

Notes:

Dear [livejournal.com profile] huldrejenta, happy birthday! You are a pleasure to know. I saw your prompts at the [livejournal.com profile] sirius_black comment fest, and thought I’d use those as inspiration to write you something for your birthday. I’m betting this is not at all what you intended when you wrote this prompt, but I hope you enjoy it anyway! Just a small bit of silliness, really.

The original prompt was:

Prompt: First kiss
Optional prompt: Rain, curfew, Remus

Summary:

Characters: Sirius Black, James Potter, Regulus Black

Words: ~400

Notes: Tangentially inspired by something [livejournal.com profile] huldrejenta wrote ("Brother") and more directly inspired by [livejournal.com profile] gracerene’s comment on that story.

SPACE COWBOYS IN A SPACE BAR

Summary:
Three space cowboys, three oversized egos, one bar.

Fandoms: Torchwood, Star Wars, Firefly

Characters: Jack Harkness, Han Solo, Mal Reynolds

(Jack Harkness/Han Solo, Jack Harkness/Mal Reynolds, implied Jack Harkness/Han Solo/Mal Reynolds)

Words: 700

Rating: PG-13

Notes: Okay...time for silly crossover fic!

(Then I swear I'll get back to focusing on my big, long, serious Harry Potter story.)

Spoilers: None as far as I can tell. (Aside from, y'know, the fact that Jack hits on everyone in the known universe, and then some!)

UNFAMILIAR TIMES

Summary: The Time Agency was baffling. But not for the reasons you would expect.

Fandom: Torchwood (and a bit of Doctor Who)

Characters: Jack Harkness & OMC, Jack Harkness/many OCs, Jack Harkness/John Hart, implied Jack Harkness/real life historical figures, Jack Harkness & the Doctor, Jack Harkness & the Torchwood Three team

Words: ~2,500

Rating: PG-13

Notes: So, for a while now I’ve had this little idea at the back of my mind that maybe Jack Harkness was not always the fearless, flirtatious omnisexual we know and love… The glimpse we got of life on Jack’s home world in “Adam” actually seemed quite traditional – a simple, homespun sort of life with a nuclear family of mother-and-father-and-kids as the main unit. …What if it wasn’t until he joined the Time Agency that Jack learned just what a flexible place the 51st century could be?

Slight spoilers for, oh, gosh, everything I guess!

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] stereolightning for beta-reading this story…even though this isn’t her fandom. She’s a star!

As always – though I so often forget to say it – this story is also on AO3.

(Albus Dumbledore, Gellert Grindelwald, and the duel.)

Characters: Albus Dumbledore, Gellert Grindelwald

Words: ~3,800

Notes: Separate from the three stories in the "Golden, Ripe and Rotten" series, but thematically related.

SOME THINGS CAN'T WAIT

Summary:

Jack burst into Ianto’s flat without knocking (typical Jack), framed himself dramatically in the doorway, and declared, “You were told about Flat Holm in the strictest confidence, Ianto!”

Ianto looked up from where he was making pizza – making enough for two, because Jack was so very predictable sometimes – and smiled at the picture Jack made, there in the doorway, indignant but never without his flare for the dramatic.

Characters/Pairing: Jack/Ianto

Words: ~1,200

Rating: PG-13

Notes: Set directly following “Adrift” (2x11). Also compliant with the “Captain’s Blog” entry for that episode (even if it may not seem like it at first!)

Also, partially inspired by a small bit in Chapter 3 of [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge’s story “Nicholas Redux.”

THE TRUTH WILL BREAK YOUR HEART

Fandom:
BBC Sherlock

Summary: Sherlock had been too intelligent for well-intentioned lies for years now. Mycroft realised he would have to be told the truth.

Characters: Sherlock, Mycroft, Redbeard

Words: ~1,600

Tags/Warnings: Sherlock and Mycroft as kids, discussion of the death of a beloved pet/discussion of putting a pet to sleep, grief, comfort, kidlock, yes: stories of Mycroft worrying over Sherlock are apparently My Thing

Notes: Another story inspired by the musings of those lovely folks over at the Three Patch Podcast ([livejournal.com profile] threepatch) – in this case, Shannon, Roane and Caroline in the Sorting Redbeard segment of Episode 35: The Bitter Brother.

VERY 21ST CENTURY

Summary: “I’ve been wanting to ask you a question,” Ianto says. “But I’ve decided against it. You’d only tell me how very 21st century I am.”

Characters/Pairing: Jack/Ianto

Words: ca. 1,600

Rating: PG

Notes: Finally, my first foray into Torchwood fic! …And yes, I know I discovered this show about a decade too late to actively participate in the fandom. Sigh.

Set shortly after “Something Borrowed” (2x09).

In case you’re not familiar with Torchwood and want to read this story anyway, I’ll try to summarise the background... The Torchwood team protect the Earth from alien threats (or attempt to do so) from a not-so-secret base called the Hub, in Cardiff. They’re led by Captain Jack Harkness: omnisexual, immortal time traveller originally from the 51st century, renowned for flirting with anything that moves. Over the course of the show, Jack develops an increasingly serious relationship with teaboy-turned-field-operative Ianto Jones, but also has an intense (though unconsummated) attraction/affection with Gwen Cooper…even when Gwen marries her long-term, long-suffering boyfriend. Yes, Torchwood’s sexual politics are complicated.

Oh, and they have a pet pterodactyl.

My headcanon of Ianto and Jack’s relationship is probably one part canon, two parts [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge’s stunningly good stories. I suggest reading all of them!

BELLADONNA BLUE

Fandom: The Mentalist

Summary: He knows it's her without even turning his head, knows her from the sweep of her skirt around her knees as she settles on the top step, the dance of her long hair in the corner of his vision.

Characters: Patrick Jane, Angela Ruskin Jane (sort of), Teresa Lisbon

Words: ~2,400

Notes: ...That was unexpected. I've watched "The Mentalist" for years, and been a fan in a low-key sort of way, but never expected to write fic about it. Then I watched the lovely series finale, and was musing about Patrick Jane's wedding ring, and this happened. And I'm rather fond of how it turned out, so I'm going to post it here, though I don't know if any of you are familiar with this show. This contains definite spoilers for the season 7 finale "White Orchids," and probably also won't make much sense if you're not familiar with episode 5x02, Devil's Cherry. (Though I'd certainly be super curious to know if the story works at all for someone who doesn't know the show! Hm, probably not. Anyway...)

Rated T for hallucinogenic/deliriant drug use.

Characters: Albus Dumbledore, Gellert Grindelwald

Words: ~1,000

Notes: “Did I know, in my heart of hearts, what Gellert Grindelwald was? I think I did, but I closed my eyes.” – Albus Dumbledore, Chapter 35 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

RIPE AS SUMMER QUINCES
(Part 2 of Golden, Ripe and Rotten)

Summary: “Albus, my white knight,” Gellert said, and something in Albus’ chest loosened and blossomed, as it always did when Gellert spoke those words. “What shall we do today, with all the world at our feet?”

Characters: Albus Dumbledore, Gellert Grindelwald, Aberforth Dumbledore, Ariana Dumbledore

Words: ~2,700

Notes: This is part 2 of a series of 3 stories about young Dumbledore and Grindelwald, from beginning to end of the summer they knew each other in Godric’s Hollow. Part 1 of the series is “Sharp and Bright against a Golden Sky.”

This is a (slightly) revised version from the one I originally posted. (The original one was here.) Nothing too major’s changed, just a few threads I wanted to highlight a little more, to make this a better set-up for the upcoming story #3.
